Discuss: Golden Pacifier Award Winners

By Sasha at Parenting.com on Tuesday, April 28, 3:08 pm EDT

We’ve announced our picks for the 2009 Golden Pacifier Awards. These are the folks that we think were great advocates for kids this year. Among the honorees: President Obama for signing the State Children's Health Insurance Program into law, Angelina Jolie for proving breastfeeding is beautiful, and M.I.A. for rocking the Grammys in a minidress – on her due date!

Did we get it right? Anyone we got all wrong? Did we miss someone who really stood up for kids this year? We want to hear what you think!

While I agreed with most of the picks I had one comment. Was I the only person that thought that M.I.A's outfit was the ugliest thing I'd ever seen? I know nice maternity outfits are hard to come by, but seriously what made her wear that outfit?!

Sarah Palin, seriously?

Sarah Palin, seriously? Taking a baby along on the campaign trail is bad enough, but trotting out your infant as a stage prop after your speeches is just irresponsible, whether that baby has special needs or not.

I think Sarah Palin is a great woman. She showed everyone that even though she has a career her family is first. And taking her son with her made it show even more. And for the moms that don't have a child that is special needs would not know what it is like. Yes she did need to take her son with her. And I wish she would have won because she is the only person that I have ever heard speak up for the special needs children of America. There is so much out there that needs to be done. The award for Obama is the only ONE thing that he has done good since he took office. There is a whole lot more things that he could be wasting our tax dollars on that would actually be good for America.

Get real! Sarah Palin is nothing more than an opportunist who used her son to score points with the out of touch, extreme-right GOP membership who had no viable options available to turn this country around. Palin got what she deserved when it came out her teenaged daughter had a baby out of wedlock. JUDGE NOT LEST YE BE JUDGED!!!! Obama's win was payback for Palin's divisiveness on trying to peg him as a Socialist. Well, if working towards healthcare, education, global diversity and economic recovery for all is Socialist, then I don't mind being Obama's "comrade"!

I think Obama's golden pacifier award completely overlooks his support of abortions, and is a seriously misguided award. Insurance for existing born children may be laudable, however, accepting and allowing the death of thousands more is unacceptable. How can such an intelligent man deny rights to that silent population?

While I believe that health care is important. I do not believe that Obama deserves recognition for signing that bill into law. I also did not appreciate the way the article made former President Bush look as if he had no heart by not signing the bill into law when he was in office. I believe that he did not approve the bill because of all the excess or "pork" that the bill contained when he was in office. He was trying to save us money believe it or not. Why does Obama always have to look like the hero when he is putting us so deeply into debt with his spending. And, as someone else mentioned, if he is such a champion of children, then why does he have one of the most liberal stances on abortion we've seen in a long time from a president. I also didn't appreciate the Katie Holmes golden pacifier. I mean isn't it our job as parents to help our children move through life and learn to leave certain things behind. It isn't always easy, but sometimes we have to be the ones to take things away. I mean, a two year old drinking from a bottle seems a little extreme to me. Definitely not something I see as deserving a reward. What are you rewarding, her lack of ability to be in charge and say no? Sorry if that seems harsh, but that is just how I feel.

I totally disagree with the Golden Paci award going to Obama. First off, how could a magazine dedicated to babies applaud a man that is 100% in support of abortion. He doesn't care about the destruction of the very same people who this magazine caters to... Babies! Second, President Bush vetoed SCHIP twice because it would allow families earning up to $62,000 dollars to have their kids enrolled. If you make that kind of money, you can afford health insurance for your kid(s). I make that much and my two kids are insured and taken care of. I'm glad you conveniently left that part out to make President Bush look bad. Let's applaud Mr. Obama for graciously standing up for children everywhere, even when he signed a bill that funded abortions in other countries right after getting into office!

I also disagree with an award going to President Obama. President Obama supports the killings of hundreds of thousands of babies across the globe so how on earth did he get awarded a Golden Pacifier? Maybe we should give him one for every child his legislation kills. It may be a good thing that President Obama wants all children to have health insurance but what about all those children who didn't get a chance at life because the same federal tax money that goes towards insurance to children kills other children.

Wow. I came on here to comment on the award being given to Obama, but I see I was beaten to the punch. The man allows the murder of children, yet he gets an award from a baby magazine. Thank you moms and dads for calling him out for what he really is.

Insulted
5/27/2009 at 12:46 pm
I was insulted that Babytalk applauded the comment from Salma Hayek about losing weight while breastfeeding. Basically she called mothers who lose the baby weight easily while nursing liars who are starving themselves and their babies. I happen to have a high metabolism, which is even higher while nursing, and have always lost the weight very quickly even though I eat almost nonstop. I am far from depriving myself or my baby of food. Such a statement could cause women to look down on mother's like me and judge us unfairly. Weightloss while nursing can vary greatly from person to person depending on their pre-pregnancy weight, amount gained while pregnant, metabolism, genetics, and many other factors. Issuing a blanket statement like that is ignorant.

Sadly Disappointed
6/7/2009 at 4:01 pm
I have become an avid reader of this magazine, and was very disappointed to learn that Obama got a golden pacifier award. I am saddened to think that someone at your magazine would desire to give such an award to a man,who is making it legal to not just abort children; but to use the tax money of those who are entirely against abortion to fund it. I think that it was a total mistake to vote such a man worthy of an award that stands for children, the care of children, and the mothers that love and protect them.
