Breastfeeding Under the Influence

By Lauren at Parenting.com on Thursday, June 25, 12:04 pm EDT

Stacey Anvarinia, a mom in South Dakota, might be sentenced to five years in prison for breastfeeding while intoxicated. Police came to her house for an unrelated matter and noticed that she was drinking, and appeared drunk, while nursing. They called the local hospital to ask if this is unhealthy for a 6-week-old baby. (Duh. It is.) So the baby was taken out of her custody and yesterday she pled guilty to child neglect. The baby was technically put in danger, but do you think this constitutes child abuse? What’s your policy on drinking and nursing?

A mother will be arrested if she gave her child a beer so why not if she's breastfeeding her baby while intoxicated? It's pretty much if not the SAME thing

Not that I condone it, but

Not that I condone it, but it takes a while for anything ingested by the mother to make it to the milk, and studies have shown that very little, if any, alcohol actually passes through breast milk. Bad idea, yes, but child abuse? No way!

i think i mother should not drink at all while breast feeding, it is not right! she should think of the baby not herself,i really dont think people should drink at all, there is no point, why do it.

I think this woman is a very selfish poor excuse for a mother. Anyone with a half of brain knows that what ever a breastfeeding mother eats or drinks goes through the breast milk. She should be charged with some sort of abuse or neglect of the baby. And the baby should be tested for anything else she may have taken while pregnant or breastfeeding!
