On our boards, we’ve read tons of stories about piece-of-work mothers-in-law. They start your baby on solids without asking, they give you dirty looks about using formula, and they play favorites with the grandkids. Next time she’s is driving you nuts, hold your tongue, put down the butcher knife, and visit motherinlawhell.com. You can share your crazy stories, read about other, worse mothers-in-law, and get advice on how to make your in-law relationship work. Think nobody can relate to your MIL pickle? This site covers every subject, from she-said-WHAT? tales to prenuptial horror stories and pretty much anything else you can think of. Your MIL may make you fume, but at least she’s also good for comic relief.

I’ve always been in awe of single moms, based on the few harried times a month my husband travels and I am solo for a day or two. And yet, I have to admit in some ways it’s more harmonious to be on my own, focusing only on my kid, and doing things exactly the way I like them done.

In light of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recent report on the rise in single motherhood, the blogosphere have been buzzing about a survey from Babytalk about the drawbacks – and surprising advantages -- of being a single mom (thanks for the link love, Motherlode!) Among the pros of being on your own: no one to bicker with over parenting decisions, no effort expended to work on marriage, and the freedom to follow your and only your dreams.

We’d love to hear from the single moms out there. Do you think in some ways you’re happier being on your own?

What beats a chick lit novel about love lost and happiness found (in the form of a wedding and/or bright-eyed baby)? A true story about the crazy up-and-down life of a suddenly-single-and-pregnant young woman. Christine Coppa’s funny, honest memoir never veers into “pity me” or “worship me” territory—and that’s why it’s such a great read. Once you've read the book, you can keep up with Coppa's (and her super-cute son's!) adventures on her popular blog, Storked.

About this time of the year, every year, the weather in New York is still crummy. I feel completely abandoned by the sun, and I pretty much have forgotten what flowers even look like -- so I was lucky to check out Walt Disney World's International Flower and Garden Festival in Orlando, when the grounds are tricked out with the most amazing flower displays. Before I had seen the festival, which runs until May 31, I didn't even know I cared about flowers. I am not a huge gardener and plants usually die instantly when in my captivity. But I was wowed by the jaw-dropping topiaries and cartoon-bright flower beds planted in Disney-themed patterns. There are tons of activities for kids as well, like garden-themed scavenger hunts, a butterfly garden, pirate and fairy themed playgrounds, and earth stations that encourage green living. My mom and I had so much fun walking around and stumbling upon our favorite Disney characters coming to life in the form of bright daisies and ivies. (The Aladdin one, I must admit, was a little frightening -- he had a large pile of unruly black hair on his head and his arms were raised in front of him, rather zombie-like.)

Another awesome reason to get yourself down to the parks: you can save at least 35% on Disney resort lodging until June 6. Click here to find out what dates are available.

Today was supposed to be the day Madonna would return to the United States from Malawi with her newly adopted daughter, a 3-year-old girl named Chifundo “Mercy” James. But the Malawian courts denied the petition, claiming that parents need to be Malawian citizens in order to adopt.

While it's frustrating that it seems like celebrities can often adopt babies with ease, while regular parents struggle through the process for years, it seems startling to deny a child in need of adoption by someone who could provide her with excellent schooling, health care, and lifestyle. But the Human Rights Consultative Committee was looking at the larger picture, imagining that situations like this might lead to the trafficking of children. The ruling, they said, "redefines the boundaries between child adoption and child kidnapping." It’s important to note that while Mercy’s mother is deceased, her father is alive (although he has not had much contact with her).

Whether we like Madonna or not, would she have been better to try to help Mercy’s biological family care for her? Has Mercy been denied the opportunity of a lifetime, or is it best she stay in Malawi?

I'd like to adopt from a foreign country some day, and I wonder if other countries will continue to redefine this adoption/kidnapping boundary. If Madonna can't adopt a child from Malawi, where she has supported 25,000 orphans, is a spokesperson for AIDS/HIV research, and leads the charity, "Raising Malawi," what chance do I have?
