From the September issue of Parenting

1. Someone's always hounding you for your autograph. Even if it's just on a permission slip for the class trip to the recycling center.

2. You travel with an entourage. Okay, so two of them are fighting over a bag of Doritos and one of them has a crusty nose, but STILL.

3. You spend your days club-hopping. How else would your kids get to Brownies?

4. You're front and center at every awards show. Because your 10-year-old would never forgive you for being absent when he wins the school carnival karaoke contest.

5. You change clothes three times a day. And it's much more fun if you pretend it's because you're being stalked by the paparazzi, not a messy toddler.

6. You're on a spa diet. Your kids only leave broccoli on their plates for you.

7. You've flashed your boobs in public. Hey, it's not easy to juggle a hungry baby in one hand and unhook a nursing bra with the other!

8. People beg to sleep with you. Well, only because there's a monster under their bed.

9. You're covered in tattoos that your kid got in a birthday-party goody bag and plastered on you when you were too pooped to resist.

10. Hassled as you feel right now, in 20 years you'll miss all the chaos.

Did you catch Paul McCartney’s performance on the Late Show with David Letternman last night? I did.

During McCartney’s first visit back to the Ed Sullivan Theater, where the Beatles launched their U.S. invasion 45 years ago, he performed several hit songs, reminisced about the Fab Four, and captivated the audience with his dry wit.

I loved it! Why? That’s easy. Many Beatles songs are fun, have easy-to-remember lyrics, and transcend generations. They’re songs that I don't hear often—unlike the Jonas Brothers’ soundtracks that I have memorized—but they’re the songs that defined my early years.

Hearing McCartney’s voice, my thoughts flew to long-lost friends, summer nights, school dances, first kisses, teenage sullenness—mine, not the one that’s looming—and the years before adulthood took hold.

It was an awesome, completely unexpected escape from reality. And, thanks to this clip of McCartney’s performance, one I can repeat. Soon.

I've seen every episode of Jon and Kate Plus Eight, and clearly I'm not the only one fascinated with the Gosselin family. Like many of the show's fans, I was often taken aback with Kate's gruff attitude toward Jon; calling him stupid in front of the kids or yelling at him in public. Still, I was excited to meet her. She didn't seem nearly as excited to meet me -- she wouldn't look me in the eye and sat stiffly in her chair with her arms crossed in front of her chest. (Her hair, I must say, was every bit as perfect as I imagined it would be. So blonde! So... spikey!) She eased into the interview after a few minutes though, loosening her shoulders, laughing, and getting animated about her children.

She got fired up when we started talking about her help. Kate Gosselin does not like the word "nanny." It isn't allowed in her household. To Gosselin, it implies her biggest fears: loss of control and her role as a mother.

She was most emotional when talking about this Fall, when all of her children would attend kindergarten three days a week. "It's going to be too quiet," she said. "Kind of sad." It's hard to picture her alone in her house -- something that she said has happened only twice since she moved in. As I pushed her to talk about how she felt, she looked at Rachel, the Director of Parenting.com, and said, "Is she trying to make me cry?"

Of course we asked about Jon. Did she want to talk about any of the nasty rumors that are plastered all over the tabloids? No.

The first episode of Jon and Kate Plus Eight: Season Five was hard to watch. Those crooked houses were a little too symbolic. I'm glad the show is taking a break; I think everyone needs it.
