This is what I've learned about choosing baby names: we are inspired by the Bible, travel, and peer pressure.

hello my name is

I recently discovered a story in USA Today that examined the most popular baby names by decade since 1890. As someone who had to pick first and middle names for his two children, I understand the fascination. One name my wife and I had loved since college (Jackson), one was lifted from a friend's random anecdote (Tanner), one was picked from a baby name book (Tate) and the last one came in a deperate attempt to choose before the water broke (Owen).

In reviewing the names listed by decade, it becomes obvious where they come from. Considering that John and Mary were the most popular names from 1890-1920, it's clear that simple, status quo names were the thing. We also relied on the Good Book for ideas, a trend that continues today (Paul, Thomas, Jonah, Ruth, Joseph, Carl). During the 90s, Mary got kicked to the curb, and we became enamored with all the girls that signed my yearbook with circles over their i's (Christina, Jennifer, Stephanie, Melissa). And now with this millennium, we are inspired by places we've been (Austin, Sydney, Brooklyn) and places we know we're headed to (Destiny).

Parents-to-be in search of that perfect munchkin moniker should check the baby name section on Parenting.com. Beyond the standard A-Z list, you can review the themed lists (like action heroes? Learn about the origins of names like Indiana, Conan, and Maverick) and pick based on any cultural and ethnic heritage you can think of (from Aboriginal to Zimbabwean).

While some of us opt for an out-of-the-box name, we are largely creatures of habit and victims of trends. "Parents in the United States are increasingly sensitive to the change in frequency of a name in recent time," states the USA Today article. It will be interesting to see the name chart in another 10 years, and if there are more Baracks and less Georges.

Have you seen? The Social Security Administration released their list of the 1000 most popular baby names of 2008.

"Jacob" celebrates its 10th anniversary as the most popular boys name!

Major upset in the girl's column: "Emma" snagged the #1 spot, putting an end to the 14-year "Emily" run.

(Funny...I don't know a single Jacob or Emma!)

First Family Watch: "Barack" didn't make the top 1,000 -- this year -- but "Michelle" lands at 103, "Sasha" holds the #363 spot, and "Malia" is at #635.

Who barely made the cut? In the #1000 spot, it's Yurem (boy) and Elianna (girl).

When I was pregnant with my first, we naively told the world our baby name choices. The girl name, Chloe, passed muster (thank goodness, since it was the name we ended up using). The boy name…let’s just say certain members of the family, well, hated it and did not hesitate to tell us so. And then they called back later to tell us some more what an awful name it was. I still loved the name choice, but the negative reaction soured my husband. We were grateful to have a girl, because we never did really settle on a boy name that we loved as much.

Ok, since you’re dying to know the terrible name, it was Oliver. Completely cute, right?

This time around, our baby name choice is a close-guarded secret that no one in the entire world can pry out of us, despite repeated attempts. We’ve actually had a really tough time deciding, so in a way outside input would have been nice, but we were just too scared of baby name backlash. (Oliver, by the way, is off the table, having been used by good friends of ours.)

Did you share your baby names before your baby was born, or did you keep it a secret?

It’s the only reason I’d welcome a phone call at 1am: I am once again an aunt! I had to laugh when I heard my brand new nephew’s name: Quinn. That’s been on the baby name short list for our little guy, and my husband’s been campaigning hard for it as his #1 pick. Sorry, babe -- guess we’re going with my top choice!

I love the name Quinn, but I didn’t want to use it because friends named their son a variation on the name (Quentin), making it feel a little less special and cool to me. My husband thinks that's hogwash, that we can still use a name even if people we know have also used it. Obviously Quinn is out of the running now (it’s hard enough keeping all the cousins straight without name duplication), but I maintain that I’d like to choose a name that hasn’t already been “taken.”

Would you choose a baby name that a friend had also used? Have you ever had a baby name taken before you had a chance to use it?

The social security administration has released its list of most popular baby names, and for the first time in 12 years, Emily is no longer the most popular moniker for girls (it's now #3). Who knocked Emily off her throne? The similar-sounding Emma. Isabella is the second most popular name for girls. Jacob came in #1 for boys for the 10th year in a row.
