None of it will matter

I remember obsessing over being totally prepared for the birth of my 1st (I have 3 kids). I had this misconception that everything had to be perfect (nursery, rest of house, garden, yard, car, bills, filing, etc.) before the birth of our baby b/c I thought I'd never get to do anything else again for the rest of my life. I spent months putting every photo from my and my husbands childhood, college years, and newlywed years in albums, so I'd be caught up. Well... my water broke four weeks early! Needless to say, we were not ready. I had placed my unpacked hospital bag next to my dresser that night w/ plans to pack it the next day! It is amazing how quickly you can pack and get to the hospital without even a thought about everything else. There will always be time to do things once your baby is home. With my 3rd child, my water broke 9 weeks early, and all our baby stuff was still in the basement. (child #2 was born on her due date- go figure). We live on an island, so that birth started w/ a helicopter flight to the nearest major city and a month stay off-island away from my older 2 kids. Definitely NOT part of my birth plan. When I got home, there was no baby gear set up or washed clothes waiting b/c everyone had been so busy juggling the other kids with their work schedules. I quickly learned that all a newborn really needs is a couple outfits, diapers, a bassinet, and their mommy. It put all that baby gear buying-frenzy into perspective. Bills got paid while nursing, cribs got assembled by hubby while I nursed the baby and chatted w/ him, clothes got washed while the baby napped. I guess my advice is to just relax. Enjoy sitting around and feeling your little one move inside you. I miss that. Also, if you need advice about cloth diapers, check out www.mother-ease.com In my opinion, they are the best cloth diapers available (I've used many, many brands), and their forums have the best advice regarding laundering, rashes, traveling w/ cloth, etc. Best of luck w/ your birth and sweet little bundle. You are about to experience the most treasured moments of your life! -JW
