I've emailed and called, but she often doesn't respond to messages, and we haven't spoken directly or seen each other since our first meeting more than a month ago. It’s been an interesting week. Natasha spoke with the credit counseling service, and they discussed what happens if her cash flow situation does not improve. Among the possible solutions mentioned was…bankruptcy. It appears that her debt situation is much more serious than we had anticipated.

As Natasha mentioned last week, I suggested they see a credit counselor. I thought it would be a good idea to give a quick overview here of what a credit counselor does -- and doesn't do.

Generally, if you're having problems with your credit card debt, a credit counselor will evaluate your income, your living expenses, and will provide you with options for paying off your credit card debt. However, this does not include student loans or auto loans.

After meeting with Natasha and Zak, I realize that the first step in our journey is likely to be the most difficult. In order for them to pay off their credit cards, build an emergency fund, and eventually be able to afford a potentially higher rent in a different area, stabilizing and improving their cash flow will be vital -- either increasing cash inflow (making more) or lowering cash outflow (spending less).

It’s hard to find time for yourself when you have a full time job, go to school at night, and have 2 young, energetic boys at home. It can be even harder to think about using that precious time on intimidating financial matters, particularly when you have never thought about it in the past.

I reached out to Natasha during one of her short lunch breaks to arrange a time to meet her and her family as we embark on our Financial Boot Camp journey, knowing that it might be tough. They came to my office one recent Saturday afternoon. Despite having car trouble on the way -- just what they needed, right? -- they took an important, positive first step: not taking advantage of a convenient reason to avoid a potentially uncomfortable situation. They arrived, youngsters in tow.
