this is actually not entirely true. subsequent studies were unable to reproduce the findings. what they found instead was that the results of the original study were a consequence of mood. listening to upbeat music in a major key enhances your mood which consequently will enhance your test scores. the opposite is also true. slow music in a minor key depresses your mood and your test scores. further the results were temportary, lasting a mere 10 minutes.

conversely, learning to play a musical instrument, especially before the age of 7, will "make you smarter". learning to play a musical instrument basically utilizes the entire brain. the brain is like any other muscle in the body. the more excercise it gets the larger it becomes and the better it functions.
studies have found that musicians who have acquired perfect pitch have a larger more intrically designed corpus collosum and anterior upper temporal lobe convolution of the left hemisphere. learning a musical instrument has also been correlated to enhanced IQ, memory, and emotional intelligence among other things.
