Aww poor baby. I remember my child being sick like this too as a baby. The only thing I remember was puttting him to sleep in his swing so that his head was tilted up a bit. His nose would drain better this way. I put some books under his crib mattress also to get a sltight tilt.
I dont remember any meds except.... saline or ocean salt spray? Just a couple of drops in the nose. I hope some other mommies can help you more. Hope he gets better.

that's too bad.. I know how terrible it is. I hate it too. Feeling useless b/c you can't do much. David has been like that a couple of time and you are right, no meds. The thing about putting him to sleep w/ his head up helps a lot. And I used the vicks humidifier which also helps him a lot.
As for taking him to the doc. My advice is to monitor him. If the cough gets worst, you should take him. B/C if his feeling a little tight in the chest that something the docs take seriously. My baby always ends up w/ a tight chest if he gets a congestion and they give him respiratory therapy, which helps him a lot to. Also if the cough gets worst they may give him an expectorant to make the cough more effective.
If its just a congestion my advice is to wait and monitor him. If he gets too fussy and cries a lot without any consolation it could be that the congestion cause an ear infection and you will need meds for that. Ear infection is a very common complication of a congestion, so watch for that. But if his happy and playing I say don't risk it. He may catch something in the doc's office.
I hope Ian gets better soon.

Reading elissamariie's post reminded me of something...the playing part. My baby was nursing just fine and I knew he was ok. He was sleepy but eating just fine so the cold did not alarm me.

Yes. According to my babies doc, since the ear canals of a baby are short and they don't know how to blow their nose, secretions can enter the ear canal and therefore cause an ear infection. But you will know, believe me. The crying can not be mistaken. It will be very clear to you that it is pain.

Ohh and I forgot if he is eating, the congestion is not that bad so dont worry. Usually they stop drinking milk. When they are nursing or drinking from the bottle they stop eating b/c they can't catch air. But my doc told me that this is normal, that a few less ounces wont hurt him as long as he is drinking something.

ohh I'm sorry to hear that but on the positive side you caught it early. And as for breastfeed babies getting less sick that is a very relative thing. My baby was breastfeed too and he gets sick often. On some articles I have read the thing about breastfeed babies getting less sick depends upon the defenses the mother has. So for what I understand its not for all virus, its just for the ones that you have the antibodies on your system.
Hope that he get better soon.
