Isaac or Derek?
My husband loves the name Derek, I just feel like it's a really common, kind of used up name..It's cute, but not my favorite. With Isaac, we both like it and I think it is unique. My mother, sister, brother...basically my whole family thinks that he will get made fun of for it. What do you think?? Isaac, Derek...Derek, Isaac?

I don't think that Isaac is near as uncommon as it used to be, and personally, I like it much better than Derek.

I really like Isaac, what will he be made fun of? Derek is a nice name as well. Who care what your family thinks the decision is up to you and your hubby. The name will grow on them. My kids both have different name some people in my family weren't really that crazy about them, but for my husband and I to actually agree on a name was a big deal. So now I asked my fam what they thought of the name later and they all feel it totally perfect. McKiley and Bryson we couldn't have picked better names for our kids. Good Luck!!

I really don't think either name is over-used. I work in a field where I meet A LOT of kids, and I rarely come across a Derek. I can't think of how kids might make fun of "Isaac"...but I'll tell you that kids can find a way to make fun of ANY name...so don't let that be your reason for not choosing it. Do you like the MEANING of either name more than the other?

Isaac means- He will laugh.
Derek means- Ruler of the people. <Which my husband is a fan of.>
My mother says that it is an "old man's name." My 13 year old brother says that if he knew a kid named Isaac, he would get made fun of for being a nerd. I really like the name, I just don't want to give him a name that he will hate. I don't think Isaac is either of those things, I think it's adorable.

as far as your brother's thoughts, he's probably right, for now. But in 13 years, I think you're going to hear Isaac a lot more.

I've never met an old man by either name. I know 2 Isaacs...neither of whom have been teased for their name (as far as I know). There's no guarantee that your son will love his name no matter what you choose. I absolutely hated my name until I reached high school and realized that it can be really cool to have a unique (but not totally wierd) name.

I agree MommaC, kids can be mean, they can make fun of any name, but for the time unless your family is planning to pick on him if you name him Issac, I wouldn't worry about it, choose the name you like best!
Isaac.
With the name teasing, I agree with kfiedler that kids can make fun of any name.

I like Derek, I think of the bartender from The Love Boat whenever I hear Isaac so I think it makes be basis...
Also keep your last name in mind when you think of names. I had a girl friend who swore she would name her son Justin James when she grew up, no matter what. She almost did until I pointed out her sons name would fine as JJ, but Case is not a good last name if you want to name your son Justin.
I have always hoped she would have realized she was going to name her son Justin Case, but sometimes I wonder....

I have to agree watch out for the last names! Justin Case, thats funny. My cousins name is Chris and she married a Crisp. So she is now Chris Crisp, what do you so, oh well. Unfortunatly though you can't pick your last name.

Absolutely. And you have to consider what their name could be later in life too (for females that is). I know someone named Aida (prounouned I-ate-a) and it was pretty funny when she married a guy with the last name of Roach! At least with males, if the name doesn't sound funny now, it will always work.
P.S. I see nothing wrong with the name Issac...go for it!
