Does anyone have any advice for trying to teach a 10 month old how to self feed, and chew? My son refuses to put any food to his mouth, and when you put a piece of banana or a cheerio in his mouth, he refuses to chew and spits it out. Please help!

He might have some sensory defensiveness or some motor issues. I would suggest seeing an occupational therapist and/or speech-language pathologist. You don't necessarily need a referral from your doctor--all evaluations and services are free. Contact your local special services agency.

Maybe he's just not ready for real food yet?

I'm sorry that came out kinda rude.As I was getting my son(11 months)ready for bed I was thinking about the post and thought if I was in your position that probably isn't what I'd want to hear so;I'm gonna try again!
When you guys are eating does your son show interest in your food?If he does than that's a start!Have you tried mum-mum rusks that melts in their mouth(my son started with those) He loved bananas pureed but when it came to the real deal he didn't really care for them either! He spit them out the first few times then grew to like them.I just kept trying to give them to him and when I would try to give them to him I'd take a bite and make a big deal (mmm,so good!)and then offer it to him at the end we were both laughing eating bananas. The cherrios have you been soaking them in formula/milk? My son still now(eating real food since 9 months)will not eat cherrios unless they are soaked in milk he'll spit them out too.If your not soaking them try it out it might work(kinda gives them a taste of what they are used to at the same time).Have you tried toast with butter? My son LOVES it,I make a toast and as soon as it pops I put some butter on it to make it soft cut it in small pieces and he goes to town, might give you an idea for something else to try.In the end, whether he's really ready or not you still should keep trying;he'll come around when he's ready!I hope this helps you out a little better than my previous post:)lol
