Well, the best thing to do if you're wanting to get shopping (I know the feeling! I couldn't wait either) is to go gender neutral colors. We were pretty sure we were having a boy (boys run on my husband's side of the family and since the man determines the sex, we we're sure it was a boy and it was :) ). I got a crib that was cherry wood and a style that would work great for both a boy or girl (it's a sleigh bed style), picked sage green for the bumper pads, curtains, sheets, ect. as well as a sage plaid for the stroller, car seat, and high chair. That way... for the nursery... I could add baby blue or pink because they both look nice with sage green. Yellow too, we got the glider in yellow after we knew he was a boy, but all three colors work well with sage and yellow is gender neutral too.
So go ahead and shop now! If you see something cute in a boy or girl's thing, buy it anyway just save the receipt so you can return it when you find out. I wouldn't recommend it for the big items like the crib, but clothes, bedding, that sort of thing can all be returned if needed.

I second Becca. Go shopping! It is so much fun! If for nothing else to just see what's out there. There are a ton of gender neutral swings, carriers, etc. And it's just too much fun to shop. Perhaps get some stuff that you will use- like a boppy, bottles, binkies, nursing covers, etc. Have fun!
I just found out I'm expecting, but I'm getting antsy about decorating the nursery.

Congratulations!
I'd say start shopping after your baby shower which is about 7 months. You can prepare your baby registry now but shop later for things you have not been given. Otherwise you may end up with identical items.

My suggestion is gender neutral too. If you plan on having another kid and the sex is different than your first you won't have to worry about putting your little boy in the pink bouncer from your first child =)

I was also going to suggest that if you really want to "shop" but aren't sure what to get, you can at least do the registry. That way it is like shopping but you aren't committing to anything or paying for it. good luck!

Oh finding out is going to be sooo exciting for you!! It made every thing feel so much more real once I found out I was having a boy, when I was pregnant.
My advice would be to start shopping ASAP. That way, the financial burden of having to buy all the baby things is spread out over several months, rather than all at once. If you're a first time mom, go to Babies R Us and get their shopping list that they give to guests when they register there. It lists every thing you will need from birth to about 1 year, and you would be surprised how much you wouldn't have thought to buy until you see it on the list.
Even once I did know I was having a boy, I still chose pretty neutral colors for the nursery, (green) and his swings etc. That way, if we have another baby that's a girl, I can add a few pink or purple accents and the green still looks great!

Here's a good tip for you new moms. Stock up on diapers while pregnant, that way the expense is spread out. After your child is born & he/she out grows a diaper size, you can return the UNOPENED packages to just about any store (I know walmart & toys r us for sure as well as many supermakets) and ask to exchange it for the next size up, no receipt needed. Diapers also don't ever go bad so why not stock up so that you don't run out in the middle of the nite.

That is my whole attitude right now too. I am nearing the end of my 18 weeks and all that is on my brain is baby shopping, decorating the nursery. So instead, I told my wonderful husband, I am going to the store tonight, I need a new pair of pants. This (hopefully) will satisfy my desire to shop plus saves the time when we can go together to register.

Congratulations! I am due in March and I've been picking things up as I see them. I think it helps spread out the spending! As I decide what brand of pack-n-play and stroller I want, I've been watching the gently used sites to hopefully snap up what I want for less money. It's been hard since I lost my job last fall. Anyway, check out www.rockabuygear.com, I was able to get a crib at half the cost of new. Plus, I'm feeling a little less anxious about all the stuff my dear baby will need. Go for it girl! Start shopping!
