2 1/2 yr old interested in boy parts

My 2 1/2 year old boy has become extremely interested in his boy parts recently. I'm aware that a child finding his/her privates is normal and healthy, but his interest seems beyond this. This behavior seems to be mostly at bedtime when he is left alone to fall asleep. When I go to check on him he will have his pants/diaper off and he will be investigating his privates. I don't want to go into greater detail -- I'm just so shocked that such a small child is showing this interest. I don't make a big deal about it, but is this normal? I have a 7 year old daughter and she was never this interested in her privates.

My son is four and he's the same way. He'll ask me to come to the bath and tell me that he has a big pee pee. I smile and say "that's nice." My husband says it's part of being a boy...the fascination starts at an early age. In my opinion, it's normal.
