How often should children clean their bedrooms? Honestly , how often do your children actually clean the bedroom????

When I start stepping on toys. That's when I make him clean up his room. The older he gets, the more I expect him to keep it reasonably picked up.

My oldest (11) is required to pick up her room every day after school. By picking up I mean getting the clothes off the floor and into the laundry room, hanging up clean clothes, and straightening up clutter. I make her do more thorough cleaning on the weekends like vacuuming and taking her sheets off the bed to be washed.
My son (4) is required to pick up his toys after playing with them in the living room whenever I can't walk through it without stepping on them. I help him clean his room because if I told him to do it they would all just be piled in the closet! When we clean his room I give him little tasks to do like "find all your legos and put them in your lego box" or "put all your stuffed animals on top of the shelf". We do this about once a week.

My kids do one bedroom related chore a day. It might be bringing down their laundry or vacuuming. It only takes a few minutes and they feel so good when their rooms don't look like a giant explosion went off. My key? We use these simple but cool chore charts. The kids always know what is expected.
You can go to my website www.simplyputtogether.com and get the chore charts I use. They are free and you can modify them on the computer for your needs.
Good luck!

My 3 and 4 year olds actually clean their rooms everyday. I have always tried to make sure that they are aware of their surroundings and I have always enforced the "get something out, you put it back" philosophy. When they were smaller, I helped so they knew where everything went, but now at 3 and 4 years, I can say "go clean your room" and they just do it. They know where everything goes so they clean and I do the dusting and make the beds. If you clean before things get out of hand, it isn't too overwhelming for them, IMO.

The kids (4, 7, 8) pick up their bedrooms every night. The older kids dust and vacuum their own rooms about once a month (they are at our house about four nights a week) and everyone brings their own laundry basket down on Friday night. When I first moved in, I had to help them put everything away in the right spot, but they do it themselves now. If they play with things in other parts of the house, they have to put it away before they go do something else. The reason for this though is mostly because I have poor vision and leaving toys out everywhere is not really safe for me, and leaving toys on their floors in the dark isn't safe for anyone!
