What and how much do I need to make sure my baby is adequately dressed? There are so many cute baby clothes out there, but I don't want to go overboard on the superfluous items. She's due in mid- August (in Chicago). Is it okay to keep her in onesies for the duration of my maternity leave? Will she be chilled, even in the warm weather? What should she be wearing to daycare after I go back to work? Any advice would be much appreciated!

We live in sw iowa and my first son was born in august, and my third will be this year, too. My oldest lived in onesies through part of Sept. until later in the pm. Then I would add a pair of pants. It seems overwhelming now, but you'll figure it out, and your new baby won't freeze. :) Congrats on the baby girl! I'm waiting on boy #3!

I live in Wisconsin I had my daughter in June I found that I didn't have her outside as much as I thought I was going to. It was a very hot and humid summer the year she was born. But if you do a onesie should be fine just make sure you keep her out of the sun. And as far as winter I am a big fan of the insulated car seat covers, Normal winter clothes (pants, dress, seater) a blanket over there body, the infant seat cover close the flap and put a blanket over the top.
As far as how many things you need. Don't buy much, friends and family will by things for you and who knows how big she will be she might to big for Newborn sizes, after she is born go through her clothes to see then what you need, but they grow way to quick, so they don't stay in the itty-bitty clothes long.

Thanks ladies! I think you're right about the family buying clothes thing: my sister just showed up at my house with a shopping bag full of stuff from gymboree! I think I will just make sure I'm stocked up on onesies and then take everything else as it comes.

My newborns live in gowns in the house. There are some wonderful cotton ones that aren'f flimsy. The lighter ones can be worn with e onesie underneath so they can kick!! For the first couple of weeks I swaddle them, they really feel safer that way, less activation of the morrow reflex.

The advice I read about this: always dress the child in one layer heavier than you would wear to be comfortable/warm, especially in the colder months.

When my daughter was born she was given a soft pima cotton gown with the matching receiving blanket. It was one of the best things I recieved. It was extremely soft. It was more of an everyday type wear instead of pajamas, so when I did take her out in public she looked very stylish. Check out http://www.littleenglish.com/. They do sell online, however they sell mainly in children's boutiques.

Thanks for the advice! As it turns out, the only shop in Illinois that sells that line, is not too far from me. I'll definitely have to check it out!
