My 2 1/2 month old daughter, who sleeps through the night most nights, has been waking in the middle of the night (more like super early morning) for the past four nights. Sometimes her diapers dirty, sometimes it's not. The only thing that finally calms her is if I nurse her. Plus, she has been waking early from some of her naps, with the same problem. She has had bad gas lately. She starts grunting and tightening her abdomen whenever I lay her down and she'll pass gas a lot when she cries. I'm wondering if her gas is waking her or if it's her hunger. I am tempted to try to let her cry herself back to sleep some nights, so that we can all go back to sleep, but I can't bring myself to do it.

Could she be going through a temporary growth spurt? she's almost 11 weeks.

I think that growth spurt thing is a wives tale. Chances are that it is either gas or hunger waking her. Gas can feel like hunger pains to babies so that may be why nursing helps her go back to sleep. Try applying light pressure to her belly and rubbing in a circular motion. Does she fall asleep while nursing at night? If so, try holding her upright for a few minutes until she burps before you lay her down.
