My 16 month old has always stuck her fingers in her mouth, but just recently she has been sticking them down her throat. One time she actually made herself throw up. I'm not sure why she does it. I was just wondering if anyone else's toddlers are doing it. And how can i get her to stop?

Oh my goodness! My 18mo old has also always put her fingers in her mouth, and from time to time has caused herself to gag but never throw up! Oh my goodness! Can't wait to see what other parents say about this one!

My daughter just turned 2 and I went through a phase of her shoving her fingers down her throat during tantrums - the first time she made herself sick was in the car when I had no way to reach her at all! She made herself sick a couple more times and then stopped doing it all together. I guess she's learned that cause and effect after a few times and now she just resorts to hitting herself on the head. Still not ideal but much better than a mess.

My 2 1/2 year old (and now my 9 month old is starting) has been doing that forever! He's made himself throw up once! He gags all the time. I asked the dr and she said it's mostly for attention. He knows I'll freak out when he does it! She also said that some kids want to see how far they can put their hands back there. They're just exploring.

My 23 month old son did the same thing and it drove me CRAZY! He was just about 16 months old too. I would take his hands out of his mouth and say 'No fingers, only food' but that really did nothing so I stopped making an issue of it. He was just checking things out. He stopped on his own after a short while. Still, it's gross :)

My neice started doing that, so I'd take them out and dab some mustard on her fingers, let's just say that she does not like mustard and quickly stopped...Everytime the fingers went in, so did mustard..

My year old son has started doing that recently,he hasn't made him-self throw up yet but gags almost everytime. My fiancee and I were telling him "no" or "you put food in your mouth" but he continues to do it. The last week or so we are trying the ignoring thing but it's kinda hard cause I don't like hearing the whole gagging thing without trying to stop him.Anyways,jenn_0629 I'm going to try the mustard thing,I haven't given it to him yet (i don't know if he likes it or not)but I'm sure anything with a fowl taste will work! Thanks for the tip!!

Yea it's normal, my daughter has thrown up salvia. She hasn't done it in a while though. Hmm the mustard thing is interesting but what if she starts drawing on the wall with it or rubs her eyes....wouldn't that burn?

oh my daughter just started doing this a little while ago--I think I figured out why--she has 3 molars that have come in.
I think she was shoving her fingers in because her gums were hurting her back there.
Are your daughters molars in yet? That could be why shes doing it

i think that it is funny that you are more worried about ur walls than finding a solution to your daughter making herself throw up.

addys mum I think it's funny that out of all of these posts that's the one thing you took from it. Way to offer some support or help.
I would say that with everything else toddlers do, this is probably another phase and they will grow out of it. They're always doing something to make us worry, aren't they? :)
