I appreciated the tip about not telling kids that Mommy (or Daddy) has to work to buy the things they love. I have jokingly said this to my infant son before about his dad. While we are sending messages to our kids about work, we should also talk about how our work (hopefully) involves helping other people, challenges us, and is important. I definitely agree it is top priority to make time to spend with our kids, but at least one parent usually has to work, and chances are (hopefully) our kids will someday grow up and have jobs. I hope my son will pursue a career that he finds fulfilling and that benefits others in some way. Instilling a good work ethic, and the idea that work can be fun and rewarding, should start at a young age (along with learning to take breaks to play!).
