Soothe a crying baby?

Hi all! My friend gets her baby to stop crying by singing in this slow, deep-voice way. It's amazing that it works! What do you do? I'm an editor at Parenting, and I love hearing these quirky things that calm babies. How have you soothed your baby?

First I'll begin with myself. For some reason, my four month old cries when I need to do something, anything. So, I'm lucky if it's right before a shower because I can sit him in the bathroom in his highchair while I shower. The sound of the running water relaxes him.
My husband is even better...when our four month old starts to cry my husband starts to rub his head. This relaxes our son and he lets his head fall into my husbands free hand. My son loves this little daddy maneuver.
