HI,

My 8 months old baby has been pulling himself up since the end of his 7 months. We were doing ok and no major falls had happen until now. Last night I heard a loud bang and my baby started crying with a high pitch. I run to his room and from the looks of the site it seems that he had fallen back. I assumed that he was standing in his crib and felt backwards hitting his head with the crib. I'm now so worried about this because from the way he was crying I know that he hit himself pretty hard. So my question is; What did you guys did to prevent your baby from hitting his head with the crib when falling from a standing position?

I don't have bumper because the pediatricians don't recommend them but I figured that the wouldn't work anyway cause they are to short.

Thanks for everything, all your advices are greatly appreciated,

Lisa

Actually the bumper pads do work. It's the lower half of the bars they hit when they fall or throw themselves around. I could be wrong, but I think most Drs. say bumper pads are okay after a certain age. My baby is 11mo and he's a crazy little sleeper. If I didn't start using the bumper pads at around 8mo he would have been all bruised up, and neither of us would be getting any sleep.

By 8 months its ok to use a bumper. If you're nervous about putting a bumper in, you can get mesh ones, but I'm not sure they'll do as much to help prevent injury from falling. Unfortunately, there's probably not too much you can do to prevent him standing up in his crib. You can practice standing during the day and help him learn not to let go without sitting down first, which could reduce the bumps when he's in the crib. As he gains stability, the falls will disappear, and you'll be able to sleep worry-free until he figures out climbing:)

Thanks for the advice... I guess that putting the bumper is the way to go. I did thought about it but had second thoughts because I read on an article that it can give your baby a dangerous "leg up" for climbing out of the crib and falling.

Thanks for the help and I hope that he doesn't figures out how to climb anytime soon... =)
