I'm really confused on how to start feeding solid foods. My MIL told me to give him a bottle first and have him eat till he's full and then top him off with solid food. But he is so full by the time he is done with his bottle that he won't eat the solid food. But because the milk goes through his system faster he is hunger again 2 hours later! So do I give him only a little bottle and then solid food or do I keep letting him eat his fill of his bottle and the try to get him to eat solids?

I usually nurse my daughter and then offer the solids about an hour later. Once she's older I'll reverse the pattern, where I give her solids and then have her nurse. Some people recommend giving them half of the bottle, then the solid food, then finishing off the bottle. THere's not one "right" way to do it-you just need to figure out what works for you.

This is what has work for me:

- Morning: A little bit of cereal (about two tsp) not in the bottle and then I offer him milk
- Mid-Morning: I give him only milk
- Lunch: I give him solids with a little bit of water (about 1 to 2 ounces). It's ok to give your baby water as long as he is eating solids.
- Mid-Afternoon: I offer him only milk
- Supper: I give him solids again with a little water
- Before bedtime I offer him milk

My baby still wakes up about 4:30- 5:00 am and I offer him milk. Every milk feeding is about 8 ounces. My baby is tall, his height and weight percentiles are above average. Because of this he requires more milk then most of the babies. So you will have to adjust this to your baby's needs.

My pediatrician is very content with my baby's diet. He's gaining weight just fine. Not more or less then he needs just the right amount.

I hope this helps,
Lisa
