I am nursing my first son who is almost 11 months old. I plan on nursing him his entire first year and then gradually wean him one feeding at a time. I was wondering how other mom's weaned their babies and was it your or your baby who started the weaning?

Also, how do you wean night time feedings? My Dr. says just to refuse him to feed... but how can you do that when he's throwing the pacifier when I try to give it to him and he's rooting like crazy?? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks! ~First time mom who likes advice and to know what works for others

I weaned my son at a year. I was the one who initiated the weaning, but he was to a point where he was comfortable drinking out of a sippy cup and wasn't nursing for comfort very much. Do it one feeding at a time replacing the feeding with regular milk in a sippy cup. Morning and nighttime feedings should be the last to go because they are the ones that are hardest for the babies to give up. In particular for nighttime, first get him to a bottle or cup for that feeding. Then, to drop it altogether slowly reduce how much milk he gets, until he just doesn't get any. How long you give him milk at night depends on your preference, not your doctor's, within reason. Just make sure you brush his teeth after his nighttime milk.
