my daughter is now 5 days old. she was a healthy 7lbs. 2oz. and 20 1/2 inches long. i have asked many people what could be wrong with her. we do not have a pediatrician yet, and i just want someone to assure me whats going on with her. she has a knot on the back left side of her neck. about the size of a pea, it moves around - but doesnt seem to bother my baby. she has been eating, urinating, pooping, and sleeping normally- she doesnt even have a fever. everything else is perfectly fine. when i was discharged from the hospital: the pediatrician there checked her out. but i guess overlooked the knot, or simply it wasnt there then. im so scared - im sure its not really anything horrible. but this is my first child, and everything else is so perfect about her. can someone please help and let me know if they have had a situation the same as mine. PLEASE. thanks. - renea & baby girl raylin

I would keep an eye on it and find a pediatrician. She's due for her 1 week check anyway, so make sure you point it out to the Dr. If it's not causing her pain and everything else seems normal, then it's probably nothing. When I was 18 months old I had a lump on the side of my neck that had to be removed. Other than the fact that it looked bad, it was absolutely nothing.
If the lump is near her jaw bone then maybe it's actually a swollen gland, which is just a sign of infection. But again, if she's acting normal and has no fever, I would just watch it until you get her to a doctor. I don't think there's any reason to rush her to an ER.
For now, just watch her and love her, while you find a peditrician. She sounds wonderful!

My daughter is 21 months. She had the same thing and the pediatrician told me it was no big deal. I brought it up at several appts b/c it kinda freaked me out that it wasnt going away. He told me they will have swollen lymph nodes like that sometimes and assured me there was nothing wrong. I would definitely bring it up to her doc at her checkup. I am curious to know if her doc will says the same thing.... Im sure she is fine. This is my first too and I worried about every little thing, especially in the beginning... thats the mommy instinct ;)
