Help! I am freakin' out a little that my 5 year old daughter is saying stuff like "I have a bad heart" and "I'm ugly and fat", "Nobody likes me", "I'm a nobody". She has alwas been told by her dad and I that she is beautiful, and I always call her "my sunshine". I am wondering if her self-esteem is bottoming out or if she is seeking more positive strokes from me. Any ideas? Suggestions?

There's a great site, www.bingnote.com, that's all about building self-esteem in children, beginning when they're young. They have some really great activity sheets, and this lady named "The Schoolmarm" writes articles and gives advice on various topics. You should check them out...I'm sure they can be of help. I actually just wrote the Schoolmarm about an issue I'm having with a 10 year old. You should try writing her...I bet she can give some sound advice. Good luck!

I almost think it's an age thing. My 4 1/2 yr. son has gone through the same thing off and on. He would say things like "I'm not good" or "My brain makes me this way" when something wasn't going right. He gets easily frustrated when he has to try again, and it's been a long haul trying to get him to realize that it doesn't have to be perfect, especially on the first try. We are still taking it day by day. I just try to be there for him.
