I'm the father of a just turned 4 year old son who has been potty trained for over a year, but he still pees sitting down on the toilet. I'd like to get him to try standing up. What is the best way to get him to try it? Any advice from fathers who have done this already?

Well, I'm not a father but I am a mom of twin 3 year olds, and I really hope you don't mind me answering your question...
When I first started potty training my boys they would sit down to pee. I didn't know how to get them to pee standing up, and really i just wanted them to learn to pee in the potty. When you go to the bathroom you can take your soon in with you so that he can see how you pee. Then tell him "Pee like a big boy" or "Pee like daddy." it might help. At first my husband was weirded out to have them in there....lol. But I didn't know how to teach them and I read about potty training boys and them being in the restroom to see someone stand and pee could really help, and well it did. Another thing we bought was a Peter Potty, it's a small toddler urinal. It was so neat and it worked out great. You can find it at walmart (dot)com or at the store. Good Luck.

My son is just over the age of two and we are beginning bathroom training but already he wants to pee standing up and wants to use the adult commode instead of his potty chair. Beofre we began to approach the topic of bathroom training our pediatrician suggested allowing my son to accompany me to the bathroom, leave the door opened when I go in, and encourage him to watch as I did my daily routein in the bathroom. This was uncomfortable to me at first being raised that bathroom time was private time but I quickly adjusted.

When I urinate my son watches me and then asses himself to see if he has the same equipment and ability. He points and is curious and excited aboout doing what daddy is doing. It is an excellent environment to teach about body parts and hygeine. Never to early to start. Children learn by watching and then doing. Chances are he has accompanied mom to the bathroom several times and id simply repeating what he sees. Once he observes daddy's method a few times and makes the connection that he has the same parts as daddy, he will start to pee just as you do. So, drop your guard, open the bathroom door and invite him in. Allow him to watch and learn. A word of caution, be mindful of how fast they learn. At the age of 2 my son is well aware of the shaving cream and the razors. To my surprise I have caught him trying to shave twice now. Therefore I suggest child proofing your bathroom before you start the observation. :-)

I'll give this a try. He has never actually watched me go, I usually keep the door closed.

my son and i do ( scores) see who can finish faster.. also he is your son, he has the same thing as you. my son and I get showers together, he now washes himself and brushes his own teeth. They learn from what they see. not only from what u tell them...
