View Full Version : Feeding solids too soon?

I'm not a parent yet (we're trying again after a miscarrage), but I am friends with a couple who just had a baby on the 5th of December so the little guy is just now a month old. Anyway the father was at work telling my boyfriend and I that he has been giving the baby pieces of cookies, pie syrup and cereal. I don't really want to say anything since I don't have children of my own. My boyfriend has five and says it probably isn't a good idea this soon. So my question is: Is it ok for them to be giving him things like that already or should I say something for the baby's sake?

OMG! That baby should absolutely NOT be having those things. The baby's digestive system can not handle that!

Yeah, way not a good thing! I know parents who start their little ones on solids younger than I did my DD, but even then it isn't cookies, syrup, or other processed emtpy calorie food!! That is not good!!Its not that its just a 'bad idea' but can really hurt the baby; their digestive systems are NOT fully matured at birth, no where near! Such a little body can't break down complex sugars and processed foods which can lead to digestive issues, cramping, vomitting, obesity, etc. Seriously, bad idea. Yes, you should say something. Read up online and quote some statistics; chalk it up to reading because you are TTC.

Definitely not what to be giving a baby that age. Poor nutrition and gigantic choking hazards. If you say something, you'll have to be really careful about how you say it. People get really defensive about unsolicited advice...but I totally understand your need to say something for the child's sake! Rallen's suggestions were good. Good luck to you (and that poor baby)!

Thank you ladies for the wonderful suggestions. I had talked to the father each time about the things he had been feeding the baby and he kindof brushed me off. Both he and the baby's mother are living with his parents so I can't understand why his mom hasn't said anything to them, but I'm going to keep trying and hope that they stop doing this the way they are and wait til the baby is older.

I would shocked if their pediatrician isn't already blasting them in some form or fashion for what they are feeding the baby - if they are honest with the dr that is. Good luck and I hope they hear you!
