I think my twins still have cradle cap! I keep doing the oil and comb out the scales, but it keeps coming back. They are almost 2 now. Is there something I am doing wrong here? Is there something that is causing this that I just don't get? They have a bath every night, I try and comb the small amount of hair they do have. Any suggestions or sage advice?

I found this info on WebMd:

What is cradle cap?

Cradle cap is an oily, yellow scaling or crusting on a baby's scalp. It is common in babies and is easily treated. Cradle cap is not a part of any illness and does not imply that a baby is not being well cared for.

What causes cradle cap?

Cradle cap is the normal buildup of sticky skin oils, scales, and sloughed skin cells.
How is it treated?

Home treatment is usually all that is needed for cradle cap.

* An hour before shampooing, rub your baby's scalp with baby oil, mineral oil, or petroleum jelly to help lift the crusts and loosen scales.
* When ready to shampoo, first get the scalp wet, then gently scrub the scalp with a soft-bristle brush (a soft toothbrush works well) for a few minutes to remove the scales. You can also try gently removing the scales with a fine-tooth comb.
* Then wash the scalp with baby shampoo, rinse well, and gently towel dry.

interesting... I guess I just have to keep on it!

My son also has that. When I told his doctor about it he informed me to use Head and Shoulders shampoo. But to make sure not to get it in his eyes! I figure it is worth a try. Good luck!

My daughter (28 mths) had cradle cap until 3 months ago. First thing- my ped said I was shampooing her hair too much(every night) and that I only needed to shampoo every 2-3 days unless her hair was dirty. Second thing I tried was Cradle Cap Care by Gentle Naturals. Picked it up at Walmart for like 7$. I eorked great. I did it 2 noghts in a row and no problem since. Good Luck

may daughter had this for almost three years. the only thing that worked was products from california baby. i used their sensitive shampoo and the calendula cream. i would massage her scalp with the tips of my fingers during shampooing. i would also comb & pick off the scales/chunks afterwards. then i'd apply the cream. it worked well for her. she is now free of the stuff. i hope this works for you!

my 4yr old still has spots of cradle cap. the only thing i do is wash her hair about once a week and massage her hair good while i'm lathering her hair. she has alot of hair and i don't like using chemicals on her head. i also use regular kid shampoo. this method works well without being obvious to the child.

*I was told that selsum blue can also help a lot and can be used for babies. If they are 2yo I dont think there will be a problem.
*The problem can also be caused by the shampoo or conditioner you use. If you change it, buy the travel size so you can test with different brands until you get a different result.
*Buy a leave-in conditioner, no one has the same scalp so it can be dry and that doesn't mean its your fault or that you didn't take good care of them.
*If you want a natural solution, buy an avocado and when its soft (ready to eat) put it in the blender and apply on hair. It's supposed to moisturize and make hair shine.
If anything else comes to mind, i'll let you know. If you tried this and nothing worked let me know.

Thanks! This problem still has not gone away with the twins. I'll try head and shoulders. I wish they made a no-tears version for kids, though! lol The ped recommended the Neutrogena T gel, but it smells so horrible.

My almost 2yr old daughter also has cradle cap. My ped told me to try the Neutrogena T gel too. I bought the Equate brand with the same ingredients at WalMart. I've been washing her hair with it every other day for the last 3 weeks and have not seen any improvement yet, and you're right it smells awful!

I agree with Selsun Blue. My daughter had the same problem and I was only washing her hair 2-3 nights a week. Ped. reccomended Selsun Blue and it worked great! This was 3 yrs ago and now she's fine to use any shampoo. Just be careful not to get it in the eyes.

I have 3 children and none of them have had any cradle cap. I think that rinsing the shampoo thoroughly from babies' hair has something to do with preventing or alleviating cradle cap. I know sometimes moms get flustered because babies and kids cry when their heads are being rinsed, but you have to rinse well regardless.
Also I used to put baby lotion in my babies' hair after each bath, so that may have helped to prevent it in the first place.

My daughter had the same problem and I was only washing her hair 2-3 nights a week. My Baby Nurse (got her from http://www.caringbabynurses.com ) reccomended Selsun Blue and it worked great! This was 2 yrs ago and now she's fine to use any shampoo. Ask your ped before you go ahead with it, so he can give you the ok.
