View Full Version : 2008 Cover Contest
Let's talk about how come ALL of the winners have blond hair and/or blue eyes? Being that cuteness level is relative, and seeing all of the beautiful (and beautifully diverse) babies that were entered in this contest, it doesn't make any sense that they would choose 5 babies that all look alike? Is this really a representation of America today? Because it looks more to me more like Germany during the Nazi regime. Now I know that my baby is the cutest in the world (LOL), but I'm not saying that she should have won. But normally aren't they required to at least toss in a token minority, if for nothing else, then to avoid a lawsuit or give the appearance of fair play? But nope, they didn't even feign an attempt at fairness. I am personally offended & disgusted.

I'm blond and fair skinned. I thought that you were being sensitive about the winners, but when I looked over the finalists again I saw that you're right. I'm a former model and I've entered many contests. Usually, the cutest kid wins and then there is a good variety in skin and hair color in the finalists. I don't see that represented in the 2008 model contest. Best thing you can do, is not enter your kid and don't stew over the pics any longer.

But if you guys watched Regis and Kelly you'll see that America actually voted online for their favorites so these kids were essentially our picks. What Regis and Kelly and Parenting did was choose a winner among the top 5 kids America chose...
So there really isn't anyone to blame...

I agree and disagree with LL's comment. I have to say that it's a little harsh. I've noticed that overall in magazines, commercials, etc. they are really becoming more diverse. I can't say that I have paid attention to this year's contest though. The cover winner of '07 looked very similar to my daughter, so I decided not to enter her this year. Last year's winner was (I believe) part Filipino, as is my daugher. Having an Asian child has made me aware of how often I see Asian children in advertising. So that really shows that they aren't always blonde.

If America voted I guess their is nothing we can do about it. I have noticed that parents mag does a great job of putting many different babies in the ads. I dont bother with these contests. i know my baby is one of the cutest things ever (doesnt every mother) and people stop me all the time saying she looks like a gerber baby and i should enter her. She had brown hair. I think I would be a little sinsitive about things.
