I can think of no other age when a little girl is more adorable than six: She'll believe you entirely when you hand her a treasure map telling her a pirate gave it to you as you expertly decipher the pirate writing to locate the burried treasure (the one you buried back in the woods a few weeks ago), she'll melt your heart when a teeny-tiny little voice emerges from the covers exclaiming, "read me a story", and you'll love watching her perform in her first Tinkerbell dance recital.

Not Punky though. Not anymore. I'm so sorry we failed you Punky. No treasure hunt for you, no dance recital, no more bedtime stories.

He was angry at his live-in girlfriend and began drinking. He wanted revenge and tried to locate her daughter but couldn't find her. Instead he drove around and noticed two little girls playing next to an apartment complex. The closest was Punky. She was only six. I'm so sorry we weren't there to protect you Punky.

The next day they found her body in the mud at a truck stop. She'd been molested and suffocated.

It took ten years but they finally convicted him: gave him life! We failed you Punky. The justice system failed you and society failed you by allowing such a travesty of justice to unfold.

Teach them dads at a very young age to beware of strangers. Practice with them to recognize kidnappers. Tell her you'll drive on the street next to her and act like a kidnapper: "little girl you want some candy or ice scream?", "little girl I lost my puppy can you help me find it?", "little girl, your mom got hurt and asked me to come get you". Teach her to distrust strangers, to scream and to run away.

Punky's dad sleeps restless tonight as he tosses and turns in the bed. Something's on his mind as he tries subconsciously to shake it. Eventually he falls to sleep but deep within it wells up as the silence of the night is interrupted with the unmistakable sounds of a nightmare: "taaaakeee meeeeee, taaaakeeee meeeee!!!" he cries. Mom awakenes him and says, "you're having a bad dream". He says it's nothing. Mom knows better but just lays quietly next to him. Upset by the dream, dad turns over to his side, stares expressionless at the floor and thinks: old man dies. . . young and girl lives . . . fair trade.
