This is not good, how could they let this happen here?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/25/fda-finds-traces-of-melam_n_146536.html

"Traces of the industrial chemical melamine have been detected in samples of top-selling U.S. infant formula, but federal regulators insist the products are safe. The Food and Drug Administration said last month it was unable to identify any melamine exposure level as safe for infants,....

"According to FDA data for tests of 77 infant formula samples, a trace concentration of melamine was detected in one product _ Mead Johnson's Infant Formula Powder, Enfamil LIPIL with Iron. An FDA spreadsheet shows two tests were conducted on the Enfamil, with readings of 0.137 and 0.14 parts per million.

Three tests of Nestle's Good Start Supreme Infant Formula with Iron detected an average of 0.247 parts per million of cyanuric acid, a melamine byproduct.

The FDA said last month that the toxicity of cyanuric acid is under study, but that meanwhile it is "prudent" to assume that its potency is equal to that of melamine.

And while the FDA said tests of 18 samples of formula made by Abbott Laboratories, including its Similac brand, did not detect melamine, spokesman Colin McBean said some company tests did find the chemical. He did not identify the specific product or the number of positive tests."

What in the hell are we supposed to think of this??!! They say go ahead and feed them what you have been, don't change their formula. Of course, my baby is on Enfamil Lipil with Iron. !!???!!?? Who knows what else is in there that we don't know about, or maybe they don't even test for. It's just scary.

The reason I posted this ,apart from it being disturbing, is that I too feed my daughter the same formula mentioned and there's more, here is what i posted at another blog

"This explains a lot, I was afraid that this could happen here in the states but I figured the FDA would do their job stateside.

I have an 11 month old daughter who until 2 months ago was breast feed, because of the downturn in the economy my wife has had to cut short the breastfeeding and switch our kid over to formula so she can find work, well we ended up switching to 'Infamil Llipil w/ Iron', the very same one mentioned above, things were going smooth until 2 weeks ago when we ran out of the liquid concentrate version of the formula and because of not having the time to go to the store to p/u more my wife asked her sister for a can of the powdered stuff, her sister also has an infant daughter, this is the same stuff but in powdered form so we figured no big deal, well as soon as our daughter finished her bottle she began to throw up and developed severe diarrhea she has been like this until yesterday when it finally subsided.

BTW her cousin had the same reaction, constant vomiting and diarrhea followed by throwing up blood.

If a moderator is reading this I still have the can in question if you want to have it tested yourself."

I can't imagine! I remember when they found it in dog food and I was a basket case!

Crap. I kind of thought when they found it in the Chinese formula it would be found in ours too at some point. I've decided that I'm just going to try my best- and if we get melamine poisoning, lead poisoning, etc. then I did my best. I can't make my own furniture, toys, food, etc.
Step it up- FDA!

One more reason for new moms to give a REAL try at BFing and to look past the "inconveinence" and "not rightness" most people make it out to be....we can't depend on engineering and false foods to feed our infants (nor help cows produce more milk for us to drink). I am so glad that I have been super pumping for the past 6 months and that I have a freezer full of milk. If this had been happening (or should I say actually being put in print/cyber news) three years ago I would have been freaking out since I had to put my daughter on formula after three months of BFing once I returned to work...oh to have known the things I know now then I would have done things so differently.

I recently read something that said we have nothing to worry about because the Us doesn't allow foreign made formula to be sold here. The article said that a few shady grocers may have bad formula but as a whole if you are buying it from a national chain there was no way to get the bad stuff. Did anyone else read that anywhere?

Yep I read all of what you said in no other than baby talk magazine's december/january issue. It made me annoyed. Obviously it was written before news came out about the melamine since the articles about melamine in us formula didn't surface until November 25th. I'm thinking they made their issue before anyone knew about this otherwise they would be lying to the public and that's just not cool.

Anyway. I have been continuing to use what I have been using and so far there are no problems to speak of. So I'm just gunna knock on wood that for the next month my baby will be just fine. He is practically a year so he will not be using formula for much longer. But seriously for parents who need to be using it what are they supposed to do if this really does become a serious problem? It scares me. And yes I do plan to breast feed my next child just in case anyone was gonna say...

"Well all they have to do is breastfeed."

That statement maybe true for people who have not had their kids yet but if their milk is not coming in they can't just up and breast feed.

I'm actually not refering to anyone on this post I was just reading some of the comments on the melamine articles and some of them were like "you just need to breastfeed simple as that." that one was very dumb considering that the people who forumla feed for one reason or another obviously do not have breast milk to give unless they have just delivered their baby. Again I have nothihng against breastfeeding I plan to breastfeed my next. Some of the comments on the article just made me mad.

Anyway...
So what else can the forumla feeders do? :( This is not supposed to happen here it makes me sick. I read that until the FDA has a death they will not do anything about this. So what they are just waiting for someone to die? Melamine is dangerous. they know that because of what happened in china. Something needs to be done!
