how does the cervix react to the very beginning stages of fertilization and pregnancy? i can't seem to figure out if the cervix becomes closed and "dryer" in order to protect the developing fetus, or if there is more cervical mucus (like that of ovulation w/ egg-white consistency) to maximize implantation? anyone have any idea? and if so, around when these changes would become apparent?

I would say more mucus like that of ovulation. Another early sign of pregnancy that people don't realize that often is congestion in their nose and chest ( most think they are getting a cold) its just your body making more mucus for the baby. I def. remember buying pantyliners the first trimester, because .... yuck!
