So, my three month old son has been very constipated lately. I have been giving him diluted Gerber prune juice. He has been having about once every other day to keep him regular, but I am worried that he will become too dependent on it. On the other hand, if he doesn't receive a little bit of it, his belly hurts and he will stay constipated for days.

Will this make him too dependent on the prune juice?

I wouldn't worry about it. Once his bowels develope a little more you should be able to ween him from the prune juice.

My daughter is 6 months old and I have frequently had to giver her juice since about the 3 month or so age. Some babies just have more sensitive digestive systems. I also have to water her baby formula down to help with the constipation.

Whatever you do, keep it moving!
My DD is now (4). She struggled with constipation from the time she was born, until she was 3 1/2. We did everything from Karo syrup in her baby cereal to
in the end, a daily treatment of Miralax. It was a nightmare for her, and scary for us. You wouldnt think that something as simple as pooping could be such an event. Like I said before, she is now (4) years old, and a self made vegetarian. We struggle to get her to eat meat and often bribe her with vegetables. I think that this alone is what finally saved us from her constipation nightmare. The most time that passes between bowel movements are 2 days, and we are excited about that.
** Unfortunately, the doctor never determined why this happened to her, but my advise is this: If your DS is going with the Prune juice, keep him on it. You may soon enough have to switch to something else to make him go **

My sometimes went two days without going. He was a breast feed baby so the doctor said that it was normal. He was probably just digesting everything. Sure enough he would eventual go and didn't seem in any discomfort. Know that he is not only breast feed he is normal.

I wouldn't worry about it too much if you are only giving diulted juice every couple days. If you are having to give it more than once a day or if diluted no longer works then I'd worry.

When you start weaning him, try apple prune juice first. Then go to pear juice or apple juice. They aren't as strong as prune, but should still help him out a little!

Good luck!

Nope. Our daughter had pear juice on a very consistent basis as an infant due to a sluggish digestive system. Once she was on solids, we helped her along by balancing her fiber through her meals. She no longer requires juice, but we use it if she gets stopped up (pretty rare now, actually!).

I nursed my daughter and when she was about 2 months old she got very constipated. She didn't poop for four days, i tried prune and pear juice, warm bath, even tried sticking a thermometer in her butt, because the Dr. advised me to, and nothing happened. Three days later i took her to the doctor and he had to get it out himself, he then told me that she wasn't getting enough fluid so we gave her pear juice everyday, just a few ounces never anymore then 4 and she did fine.
