Hi, new here! I'm currently in my 3rd trimester/ 7th month with twin girls. I wondered from the moms here who have as many children as they want right now who use or have used Mirena. Has it been effective with or without condoms and did you experience any adverse side effects from it like not being able to conceive or having ectopic pregnancies? There was no section on birth control so I didn't know where to put this or if it was ok to even post about birth control here.

I had the Mirena for 3 years, after I had my daughter. First 7 months I didn't experience any of the positive effects - then my normally irregular cycles even out completely, my flow lightened considerably to the point I only needed liners, and my cycle only lasted 4 days instead of my normal 6.

I did experience more cramping, something I'd never had normally. Not bad though, and usually for only a day or so.

I had it removed in Aug last year. I was unfortunately in the 1% or so that experienced issues with the removal string migrating up into my cervix. No ill effects from that, just meant I had to be put under so my dr could use a scope to remove it. The manufacturer lengthened the string after I had mine put in just to counter that from happening. I had no negative side effects in the 3 yrs.

So had it removed in Aug, conceived our son in Oct. :)

I plan to do Mirena again after our son is born in a few weeks while we discuss a more permanent BC since we are finished having babies. My experience was very positive overall!

Good luck!

Ok cool. I mean I don't really PLAN on having more since I'm having two at once but I at least want to have the option when the girls are school age if I decided to. Good they lengthened the string, I'd totally freak out if that happened to me. I'm going to talk to my OB about opting to have that instead of oral contraceptives or permanent prevention. I'm worried about BC pills affecting my milk supply.
