Hello,

We have a 6 month old boy (our first) and about a month ago our pedi told us we could start with a tablespoon of cereal and orange veggies (carrots, sweat potatoes ..etc). We give him this at around 8pm and then he drinks about 8oz of milk. Then its bedtime. This is what our pedi said we should do.

What we've been dealing with is..around 2:30,3:am, he begins kicking his legs, arms banging on matress and moaning. This could go on and on and on.

So for all of you experienced moms and dads: Do you think his sleep issue is related to too much food at one time? It just seems like a lot to me but his sleeping issue is concerning me. NOt that he was a great sleeper before the food (he has acid reflux and had gas issues).

Thanks in advance.

Most babies should be able to handle what you do at 6mo of age - I think after a few weeks of introducing solids my baby ate more than that. However, if your baby has reflux issues than maybe it isn't a good idea. Personally, I fed my baby new foods in the AM for a month before adding a dinner time with known foods - my reason was so I had all day to watch for allergic reactions. Maybe you will want to consider doing the same- that way he is able to digest the food before laying down for the night.

Also, some babies are poor sleepers and need a lot of help to learn to sleep through the night. Try the little tricks like white noise (humidifyer is perfect this time of year) soothing bedtime routine, etc.

What kind of cereal are you using? Rice tends to be a first choice for moms but creates constipation, which is very painful for babies. If you are using rice, try using barley or buckwheat cereal. The night feeding should help him sleep better, not make him miserable.

After re-reading your post, I wonder if in the middle of the night your baby is experiencing a confusion arousal (the generic term that encompases sleep walking, night terrors, and general night waking but yet not really awake). Ask your doctor about it or do a little internet research. It is not totally abnormal, but there are a few things you can do that may help if it is a confusion arousal.
