View Full Version : define "heavy"
Several people have told me, "No heavy lifting!" I've also seen it mentioned on here. Can someone define "heavy lifting"? How do I know if I'm aloud to roll the ottoman over onto the couch so I can clean the living room floor more easily?

I was told not over 25 pounds...but I see pregnant woman carrying their 2 and 3 year olds who have got to be at least 35+lbs. I guess ask your Dr.

I am 15 weeks pregnant and my doctor told me it was ok for me to lift my 4 years old DD who weighs 26 lbs. I am lifting loaded laundry baskets, groceries, etc. I try not to lift anything that puts ANY strain on me. If it isnt easy, Im not lifting it.

I get that a lot too, specially at work. Last week I pick up a bag of laundry and then i had to pull the shopping cart wit the bag a flight of stairs, my back was killing me later in the day.
I also think is because since our muscles are more relax we are more prone to injuries now than before we got pregnant.

I know as we get farther along...there is a hormone released that loosens our joints...I'm there now and let me tell you...I hyper-extend my hip all the time...it hurts!
I'm guess I'm doing ok then. I'll try to keep it to things that my arms can lift by themselves, without too much help from my torso muscles. It's a good excuse to have my honey do the "manly" stuff, anyway. :-)

Relaxin does loosen your joints and softens cartiledge.. not lifting heavy loads helps prevent injury to them.
I was told 20 lbs was the limit with my first pregnancy. Any lifting contracts your ab muscles - which won't do much without uterine contractions, but I'm sure with the amount of flexing necessary to lift certain weights, it can't help at all.
I had sciatica bad with my second pregnancy so I wasn't walking much, let alone lifting.
Take it easy and listen to your body... if you lift something and feel pressure in your pelvis.. you're doing too much.
