My husband and I have recently decided to start trying to have a baby. I began taking over the counter prenatal vitamins with 800 mcg of folic acid. I asked my ob-gyn if I needed prescrip vitamins and he said that the ones I was taking were fine unless I had a family history of spinal issues or defects. I don't - really. But the more I thought it, my father had scoliosis as a child and now my baby sister has just been diagnosed with it. Other than that we have all been blessed with good health. Do I need to worry about getting presrip prenatal vitamins or is 800 mcg enough? This is my first and I am trying to do it right but trying not to be an over protective helicopter mom before the thing is even conceived! <:-D

When I remember to take my PV I also take extra Folic Acid. Even though we have no family history of back problems & the PV has enough I take extra.
You should be fine, but it won't hurt for you to take extra if it makes you more comfortable!

I never take the prescription prenatal vitamins because I don't really think they're any better, and are probably worse in many cases. Just make sure you choose a good quality prenatal that has an adequate amount of folic acid. If you're concerned, you can always ask your OB what he/she thinks of you also adding an additional folic acid supplement. My hubby's family has a history of some spinal issues as well, and so I take an additional folic acid pill along with my prenatals. Check this with your OB first though. As for the prenatal, I really like Completia Prenatal by Nature's Way (you can get it at seacaostvitamins.com). It's a good brand that absorbs well into your system. And it only requires you to take 2 pills per day (some require like 4-6).

Its really difficult and risky to take prenatal Vitamins knowing that your family have history of scoliosis. Better to have it check first, even the chances of acquiring it is very minimal atleast your health is not at risk.
BTW, do you guys try not to use that folic acid?

I suggest you consult with your doctor first in everything that is related to prescription vitamins. But what I consider to be even more important is the healthy nutrition. There have been studies showing that taking that same vitamin as a pill is different from taking it in the natural form (from the foods that contain it). Therefore, I personally am all for the natural way! And a good post I can suggest about it is: http://www.ovuline.com/ovublog/?p=41
All the best and have a healthy baby!
