Whooo! I finally got a PS3 and it's the best thing in the world. Playing a shoot-em-up game like Call of Duty 4 in 1080p is crazy realistic. For me, that's cool, I'm not sure it is for my daughter. I typically don't let her (1 1/2 yrs old) see when I play, since I don't want to get unnecessarily exposed to violence.
Question is, what do?

We downloaded a great bowling game from the PS store if you a connection. It was a blast! You use the controller like a ball - almost like the Wii does. Did that for hours!! DD got a kick out of the pins being smashed, and lots of colors.
And don't forget ROCK BAND!! We have all the Guitar Heros and Rock Band. RB is out absolute fave! DD loves to smash around on the drum pads, and she bangs the drum sticks on the floor and pots/pans when we aren't using them in the game.
DH loves GTA4, but that DEFINITELY isn't played when DD is around to hear. She doesn't really watch TV at all, not interested in it, but the sounds alone are insane!
How about that BluRay?! Gotta love movies in HD!! We signed up at Netflix just because their availability of BR movies is unsurpassed and for only $16 a month we have 2 out every week. Way cheaper than $30 a pop to own them! Blockbuster online NEVER had the BR's available, always a wait.

I have Call of Duty 4 too. I have a PS3, a 13 yr old boy and a 7 month old boy. I would be more concerned about the noise. I wouldn't be too worried about a 1 1/2 yr old girl becoming violent or disturbed by a war game unless it was like Resistance. (That could cause nightmares.) I say keep the volume down, have her facing away from the tv and have happy music playing. Better yet, do it during nap times. My older son and I wait until the little one is down to play. It is easy to let the computer, tv or gaming system get in the way of spending important time with a little one. Remember how important it is to interact with her even if the games seem silly.
Eventually gaming can be a nice bonding experience but you will need a game like ra11en mentioned.
PS - If you like Call of Duty 4, check out Bad Company, Resistance and Metal Gear 4.

My wife and I have a 3 and 5 year old boys. Both my sons love to game by themselves, with each other, or with me.
We have PC gaming, Xbox 360, PS#, WII.
I think the best game system for them is the WII, reason being they love to play all the Mario games. The games are not bad for them and they pickup have to play the game.
I am also getting my older son into using the computer, we are going to start buying him learning games. This will teach him how to use the computer and this will also be fun learning for him.

The Wii is definately the best system for kiddos'. The computer learning games sound like a good idea. The internet is the best and worse thing to happen to this world. I'll be looking for some good parental software in the future. Prior to that I will have some off-line computer for learning purposes.

Thanks ProudParent940. I've got Metal Gear but haven't even broken the plastic on it yet. Been working my way through Uncharted, Blazing Angels 2 and starting on Assassin's Creed. I want to get into Madden, but I'm afraid I'll need a catheter and a feedbag so I'll never have to get up.
Thanks for the feedback too on the little eyes watching, makes me feel better. You're right on with the volume, that's where I end up getting into trouble!

I actually have the Xbox 360 which I love man. My game is Grand Theft Auto IV, I have a 6 year old daughter and a 7 month old daughter so I never let the older of the two watch me play that game at all. Call of Duty 4 is brilliant though I played that prior to GTA.

leave it to us guys to talk about video games on a parenting blog. The only thing I can add to this is kinda cute. From the time my son who is now 5, was about 6 months old till about 18 months old, I would sit him in my lap and hold my ps2 controller on his lap and play tony hawk for hours. he would laugh when i crashed and laugh when i did a huge combo. I thought he wouldn't remember it but he did because when x-mas came this year he said hey dad I am going to ask santa for a skating game for my ps2 like the one me and you played when i was a baby. I got a laugh out of it. so santa got him tony hawk for x-mas. I set the game up for him and told him i would show him how to play thinking it would be a bit hard for him. he said dad i know how to play from watching u. I was thinking no way does he remember how to play from 3 yrs ago, he didn't even play i was. but to my surprise when i handed him the controller and said have at it, he kicked butt and landed huge combo's and ended up beating the game, I helped here and there but for 90% of the game it was all him.
