View Full Version : empty pregnancy sac?

so i had my first ob/gyn visit today to confirm my pregnancy. I thought I was about 8-9 weeks along based on my last period. Well, everything was confirmed that I am pregnant. however when the doc did the sonogram to make sure everything is okay, all she saw was an empty sac. she couldn't find the baby at all. she said it could either be that i am too early (which the sac measured at 6 weeks) or it could be an abnormal pregnancy.

has anyone ever had this? by the way this is my 3rd pregnancy, I have 2 boys; a 4 yr old and 2 yr old.

how stressful!!! like she said, it could just be that the baby is still too small to measure. i had a u/s at 7 weeks with my second, and they couldn't measure her or find her heartbeat. at 9 weeks they could see a flicker but still couldn't measure the heart rate. but she's now 3 and just fine! so try not to worry until they actually give you some bad news. you are not that far along. most of the time you have to wait until 19 weeks for a u/s, so sometimes technology is not a good thing! can they check your hormone levels to make sure they are doubling every day?

I am so sorry that you are going through this! I had the same thing with #2 (now 4). First, they checked my hormone levels to make sure that they were doubling and then they scheduled a higher-level sonogram - which showed that everything was okay....but I'll never forget driving home from the OBGYN after that first appointment and trying to hold it together when I got home and saw my oldest (then 4). What did your doctor say?
I wish you the best!!

Thanks for your concerns. I am getting my hormone levels checked to make sure they are doubling. I have my first blood test today then checked every two days two more times. We will see what the doctor says...

Thanks

I am so sorry you are going through this. I had to go through the same thing. I had my hormone levels checked and they were not doubling and a second u/s gave the same results as the first. It was really hard to deal with at first but I got pregnant again three months later and he is a beautiful 8 month old little boy. Hang in there. I am sure you are stressed but it will all work out. I think I have heard more often that a second u/s is just needed. Good luck!

You know, when this happened to me, they actually told me I had miscarried. (The nurse, not the doc...doc was on vacation) They didn't even offer the blood test until I asked about it. Can you imagine how many people have D&C's and terminate their pregnancies without even knowing it? It's so sad. I wish doctors would hold off a little on scheduling ultrasounds! I know I will be refusing to go right away next time.

im kinda just butting in but my Dr wont even so an U/S until 5 months unless something appears to be wrong! i had some spotting and cramping and he's just having me do blood tests first to see if they are going up. he says theres no reasone to do a U/S cause you would get freaked out cause theres nothing you can see yet....

but i just wanted to add that!
oh and congrats on your numbers doubling!! thats GREAT NEWS!!!

Mine was the same way. I read specifically in the paperwork that most insurances only cover one u/s. So they just do the 5 mos. one. Well, that's when I found out it was twins. Ha!
But I've heard from other Moms that this was unusual. That they usually do a first u/s in the first month or two.
