How much weight did you gain during your first pregnancy? 36 weeks and I'm already at 35 pounds! I'm worried I'm going to have a gigantic baby that won't fit!

I gained 38 pounds with my first and he came out at 8 pounds. I than gained 50 pounds with my second and he came out at 8lbs 5.2oz. My midwife always told me something I appreciated....your body makes itself the perfect sized baby for you. Try to keep that in mind.

I gained about 67 pounds with my first one, but I had geststational diabetes, and problems with blood pressure and was swollen alot and spent the last 3 weeks of my pregnancy in the hospital on complete bed rest delivered 4 weeks early she was a 7 lb 15 oz preemie. Don't worry about weight gain just a healthy baby. When I delivered I went down to 115 lbs just 15 lbs. more than my pre-pregnancy weight and at 6 weeks was back to 100 lbs. It was all baby and fluid. Now I'm only 3 months and has already gained about 17 lbs. my ob-gyn told me not to worry about it I have big babies.

hi ladies,

I'm 11 weeks along, and haven't gained at all. Should I be worried?

If you're wondering, I am eating ultra healthy food (lots of salads, breads, fruit, meat, milk, nuts and the like). I also eat small meals, often.

Does eating like this cause the lack of weight gain?. Am I not eating enough food? not the right type?

Any advice would be very much appreciated

I was at the high end of my 'ideal weight' and gained 48 pounds with my daughter and she was only 7lbs 15oz. All of my Drs told me that my baby was going to be at LEAST 9lbs! The good news is that all of the weight plus 10lbs has come off since chasing her around as a toddler with relatively minimal effort. Good luck!

Xian,

Keep doing what you are doing. With my first pregnancy, I wasn't gaining much weight at the beginning and when the nurse made a comment, I started eating a ton and gained 45 pounds. You should be eating an additional 300 calories than before. If you are still concerned, I would bring your concern up to your doctor, but I think you are fine.

I gained 55 lbs with my first, she weighed 8lbs 6ozs. I gained 35 with my second and he weighed 9lbs 9ozs. I'm now 20 weeks pregnant with twins and I've barely gained 5 pounds. I agree with the midwife that said your body makes a perfect sized baby for you. I'm a small framed woman and had no trouble delivering my 9 and a half pounder. ;)

I gained 35 lbs with my first and she weighed 8lbs and 11ozs with my second I gained 30lbs and he weighed 8lbs and 5 ozs and with my third I gained 38lbs and she weighed 8lbs 1 oz....all big babies...but lost my baby weight with all 3 pretty fast so I would not stress too much about it...every pregnancy is different.;)

I gained 32 lbs with my first baby, he was 6lbs. 11oz. at birth. I am now almost 16 weeks pregnant with my second baby (don't find out the sex until next month) and I have only gained 1 whole lb! I'm really surprised however I am smaller starting out than I was with my first pregnancy. I lost almost 3 dress sizes prior to getting pregnant this time around.

i gained 40 lbs with my first and she was born 8lbs. the best way to get rid of that weight is to breastfeed i lost almost all the pregnancy weight

I don't remember what I gained with my first two (girls), but I know I gained over 40 lbs for each. This time I am already 25 wks (boy) and haven't gained a pound yet. I was worried untill I realised I haven't had fast food in mths and only want to eat raw veggies and fruit. Every time I even accidentally eat beef products, the next day I'm in the bathroom all day!!

I think it is all individual - with my first baby I gained 22 pounds (and fairly evenly throughout the pregnancy). She was a healthy 7 pound 4 ounces born full term. This time I am 16 weeks and haven't gained any weight so far (actually lost 10 pounds due to morning sickness). The baby seems healthy, though. So don't stress - everyone is different, and check with your doctor if you are really concerned.

I'm 22 weeks along right now, at 15 weeks, I was -3 pounds and at 19 weeks, I had gained 8, so five all together. My appetite is back now and I have a feeling I've gained another 5-9 lbs. It all depends on you and your baby. Everything is fine, ask you doctor or midwife about you weightgain and see what is healthy for you. I was told 25-35 pounds is my target.

With my first pregnany I gained 16 lbs. That is not normal though, and I was only 17 yrs old though. My baby came out really healthy and perfect, I just didn't gain a lot of weight. I have heard that the average weight gain is between 30-50 lbs. I have seen so many women who say that they are eating for two, which is their excuse for gobbling up everything in sight. When I was pregnant, I read so many books on eating healthy and that you aren't eating for two at all! I changed my whole diet! I cut out caffiene (even chocolate) and cut my sugar intake down a lot. I mostly ate healthy things with lots of nutrients. I never skipped meals. I always tried to remember that everything I put into me is going to my baby too, and I wouldn't want my baby to eat that whole bucket of french fries or that candy bar so I didn't eat them.
I would suggest to not even worry about it! You are supposed to gain weight when you are pregnant, you need to gain weight for you and the baby to be healthy. Just eat the right foods. Everyone's body is affected differently by pregnancy.

This is my second pregnancy and i'm 17 weeks along. I have gained a total of
3 1/2lbs...And, yes i am worried about gainning too much weight just like the rest of you moms but, as long as you dont just eat eat eat you should be fine with your weight gain.I gained 54lbs with my first pregnancy and it was b/c i thought since i was pregnant i could eat whatever i wanted and whenever i wanted, but be careful doing that b/c eating too much can have you gainning more weight than you should.baby weight is good, just be careful with the foods you choose.make healthy choices for you and your baby.GOOD LUCK!!!

I gained 30 lbs with my daughter, and she was weighed in at a healthy but small 6 lbs 9 oz. I'm a very small framed woman, so it wasn't surprising to me or the doctors that I didn't gain much weight. I ate super healthy, and didn't gain much until about 7 months but gained steadily from 7 to 10 months along.

Congratulations on the upcoming addition! :)

With my first son I gained a total of 75lbs. A lot of that was due to excessive eating of horrible foods. I had only lost 12 of that and he will be 7 yrs old. I finally began losing weight when I started working out. Lost 20 lbs and got pregnant again. So far I am 25 wks and have only gained 6 lbs, but I am eating enough to keep me full. I make healthier decisions and eat a lot of small snacks in between meals. I have succumbed to some cravings but still have not gained much. Don't worry about your weight as long as the baby is growing. When I went for my sono at 19 weeks my baby was almost 2lbs, even though I hadnt gained much.

My first pregnancy I gained 70 pounds, my daughter was 9lb 7oz. By my 6 week check up my BMI was in the healthy weight range. I could never understand why I put on so much weight. I only ate healthy foods (I'm a health freak!) & I exercised 2 hours a day. I was playing tennis up to 3 days before I had my daughter. My doctor said for me not to weigh myself & to continue my eating/exercise routine. When my daughter was born she was so strong. Could hold her head, lift herself up, the midwife was really amazed, by the time she was 2 months old was sitting up without assistance & walking at 7 months. I'm pregnant now & my husband has thrown out my scales...

I gained 55 lbs with my first. He was 7 lbs 5 oz. But even my doctor wouldn't have believed I gained that much if the scale didn't tell. I carried him all up front. I ate extremely healthy, too. More importantly I lost the weight very quickly just by eating well and doing normal exercise. I'm pregnant now with my 2nd and am 18 weeks and have only gained 3 1/2 lbs. I say just keep eating healthy and don't worry about the number so much. Everyone and every birth is different.

I was 125 lb before getting preg and became 195lbs by the time I delivered a 11.9lb boy. I gained about the 60 lbs on my 2nd and delivered a 10.12 lb girl. I am now 6 mo preg with 3rd and I have gained about 27 lbs and would probobly deliver a much smaller baby, 9 or 10lbs baby. I come from a big baby family history, so it was already expected I would deliver big babies.

I had a friend who had gestational diabetes and had a special diet during pregnancy; she only gained 12 lbs her entire pregnancy! And had a healthy 6 lb. 10 oz. baby boy! We basically figured that the rest of her body actually lost a little weight (or body fat) while her belly gained so it was almost balancing itself the whole pregnancy! I think it is great that you are eating a healthy diet; so many women use pregnancy as an excuse to binge on all sorts of food and probably more junk food than they normally would:) I have a 6 month old baby and just found out today that we are pregnant again. I gained 50 lbs with my first pregnancy and only lost 25 from actual child birth..... now I am still overweight and pregnant again! I plan on continuing my healthy eating habits and hopefully I can balance my weight too! You only really need an extra 300 extra calories a day while pregnant; breastfeeding you actually need 500-600 more! Weird but true. Make those calories count and best to you!

I wouldn't feel bad at all about later weight gain. A month ago at 20 weeks i had stayed steady at 8 lbs weight gain and was not interested in food at all. Now i'm 24 weeks and gained 8 lbs in less than a month! Which brings the weight gain up to about 17 lbs. In everything in read for someone my size and weight i should only gain between 25-35 lbs and if my calculations are right 8lbs a month i should be gaining another 32lbs!!! I hope thats not true but the babies healthy right now so that's all i can ask for! So that's all anyone should worry about. Worry about the weight after you have the baby, thats when you can actually do something about it!

I lost weight during the first trimester of both my pregnancies. With my first I was so sick I couldn't keep anything down. With my current pregnacy I just didn't feel hungry so I had to remind myself to eat dinner. By 14 weeks I started gaining weight. I wouldn't worry about it right now- just be thankfull! It's coming!

I have 14 month old twins which are my only children. I gained 35 pounds but gain most of the 35 in the last few weeks. I delivered, at 35 weeks, a 3lb 12oz little girl and a 5lb 5 oz little boy. But for the first 4 months, I only gain a couple of pounds.

With my 1st pregnancy I gained exactly 40 lbs--I started out at 111 lbs and went up to 151 by the time I had him but I had preaclampsia and toximia(not sure I spelled that right) so most of my last month of weight gain was water retention. I looked awful. My face and neck even got swollen...not to mention my feet and legs! Most of that was due to the fact that my Dr. wouldnt listen to me about when I was due and decided he was right only to get proven wrong when I finally had him.(We found out he was AT LEAST 3 weeks late and we could have died!) With my 2nd I only gained 15 lbs because I was soooo sick for the WHOLE pregnancy. At least she was born on time!!

I gained about 37 pounds total during my 39-week pregnancy. It was all gone around the time my daughter was 6 months. Honestly, I didn't really work out (other than the daily momma-go-there-and-get-that-and-sit-and-bend-and-reach, etc). I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I ate mostly fruits, veggies, and cereal when I had cravings...not so much the ice cream and candy bars which tend to really stick. Don't worry about how much weight you gain. As long as you're eating healthy and staying active, I'm sure you'll be fine. :)

okay this is off the subjest but i just ate lunch and my stomach is killing me, what causes this?

MommaC
06-26-2008, 06:16 PM
Probably acid indigestion or reflux. It tends to get bad during pregnancy even if you never had it before because there's just less room for your stomach and its contents. Eat smaller amounts. Avoid greasy foods (or really fatty foods and maybe even sweets if they bother you). Don't lie down right after you eat. If you drink too much with your meals, that may make it worse as well. I had it pretty bad, and none of the over-the-counter stuff was very helpful. My doctor said I could take Prevacid, but I was really trying to avoid all medications. What worked for me was 3 Vlasic Ovals (the dill pickle hamburger "chips"...they're pickle slices). The vinegar supposedly neutralizes the acid. Worked for me. Best wishes!
