Hello, new here.

My baby girl is going to be a week old tomorrow (Friday). We had a rough start to BF and by Tuesday she had gone from a 7lb 10oz birth weight to 7lbs even. I felt that she wasn't eating enough as she wouldn't latch for me, if she did she'd only eat a few minutes and she was really fussy. She was peeing and pooping but I was convinced she wasn't getting enough and it had me nearly in a panic.
We contacted the lactation consultant that I'd seen in the hospital (I had a c-section) and went in on the Tuesday mentioned above.
She worked with us for quite some time, introduced a nipple shield and it made a huge difference.
In the days since she's definitely increased her feedings and I've even managed to get her to feed successfully without the shield at times (I've read they can shrink milk production due to decreased stimulation of the nipple) but I'm still worried.

Everything and everyone says that babies NEED to eat 8-12 times a day for at least 10 minutes preferably on each breast.
She does not. She is a one breast at a time girl though I've managed to get her on both a few times. She will happily sleep hours without eating though I do have my husband set the alarm and we do try every three to 3.5 hours. She's a pain to wake up and feed, but when she's awake she's very alert and active. No signs of jaundice. I do have another lactation consultation this Tuesday which I'm looking forward to but I cannot stop worrying that she's still not getting enough.
From 6 a.m. this morning she's had 6 diapers, 4 with obvious pee and 2 I couldn't quite tell if it was just poo or also pee.

Sorry for the novel but this is my first baby and I'm sadly a paranoid person by nature. My husband is telling me she's fine but I'm still worried.

im sure she's fine... all babies lose weight in the beginning. i was the same way and actually put my baby on formual one night then felt like i was doing the wrong thing and put her back to the breast... it was the best thing. things will get better, give it 2 weeks. i was pariniod and paniced just like you, give it time, the baby will learn and you will soon wonder why you paniced as i have!!!

dont give up, the breast is the best!!! keep putting her to you and she will soon just take off like a pro!!

Hugs!! Your are doing just fine mama. My ds also only likes one breast at a time and is very efficient (sometimes done in less than 5 minutes). As long as your lo is gaining weight and producing wet/dirty dipes, you're doing just fine :) It is normal to worry given the culture we live in, especially with your first babe. Here's a list to Kellymom too. Bookmark it, b/c it's a great resource :)

My first few weeks was similar. My baby ate every 4 hours. I think the most he ate was 7 times a day. As he got older he began to eat ever 2-3 hours, but was sleeping longer at night. I have heard of babies sleeping through the night at a week old. Nurses at the hospital told me that I should wake him at least every 6 hours, so maybe you should let her sleep a little longer (it's hard though :-). My baby became a one side at a time baby (I produced A LOT of milk) although we are now back to both sides once he hit 6 months.
Another resourse is http://www.nbci.ca/ - it is a little extream, but looking past that the information is good.
You had your consultant appointment yesterday, I hope it helped. Any information you learned that might be good for other readers to learn?
