My baby girl is my first angel and 8 weeks old now. Needless to say it's been a long 8 weeks!

First i thought i gave birth to an insomniac. All the books (and friends who have had kids) said she'd sleep around 15 - 20 hours. never. most she ever got out of the hospital was around 7 to 9 and that was in intervals of 15 min to an hour tops. even now i can only get 2 hours tops. She cried, drooled, spit up all the time, and spit up about half formula feedings and almost all breastmilk. (I wont go into the guilt of having to suppliment) ped diagnosed her with reflux and put her on zantac and switched formula to enfimil AR. suggested adding a tiny bit of rice cereal to my pumped breast milk to thicken it so it will stay down. things improved a little, kept more food down and started gaining weight. still a lot of crying and not much sleep. then the screamimg that lead to diagnosis of an ear infection. we are finally over that and now she is crying so much again. neither one of us sleep, she is so uncomfortable. i am pretty sure its gas or something that causes gas. she will be fine for a few minutes then suddenly start flinging and flailing her body, turn red and start wailing. she seems to be straining, then she lets out a huge gulp of air (from one end or the other!). This flailing and air passage goes on for almost an hour before I get another few minutes of calm. then we start all over again.

Other than the perscribed changes, I burp her several times during each feeding and try to avoid gassy foods in my diet. Plus she won't let you hold her anywhere but over your shoulder. I guess the pressure on her stomach helps. I can help her get the gas out, but any ideas on what could be causing it and to this extreme? I am a little at the end of my rope here before sleep deprivation makes me delirious!

It very well could be lactose intollerance. Babies are usually gassy, have a stomach ache, and will spit up alot of their feedings. I'd talk to your ped and see if you could change her formula again to a soy based formula and you will need to limit your dairy intake as well. Your ped will give you the specifics for your particular situation.

Mylacon drops work wonders for gas, as well. You can also lay her on her back and move her legs in a motion similar to peddling a bike, it will help the gas come out.

Thanks for the advice. After many more ear infections (we are on #7 now and not yet 4 months) and a whole list of antibiotics, zantac and gosh knows I can't remember what else I finally went to a different doc that instantly put her on a different formula. We went in this week to the new doc with congestion and coughing, and as soon as he looked into her ear he shook his head. Another one! And it was horrible looking, niether of us knew how she wasn't wailing. I suppose she got used to having an ear infection, which is really saddening to me. It made me feel so bad . ..
So we are switching over to Nutramigen AA. I have never heard of it, but after research I found it is horribly expensive and you have to order it. Normal stores don't carry it on the shelves. I really hope this helps her, I don't care what it costs, I know there is a happy baby under all this somewhere!

Is she still getting any breastmilk, or just formula? Formula-fed babies are much more susceptible to ear infections than breastfed babies. What methods have you tried so far to increase the amount of breastmilk she's getting? I ask because we might be able to suggest some methods you haven't tried yet. Even if she's getting no breastmilk at this point, you could try to relactate (which is difficult, but then again, dealing with a sick baby is also difficult.)

Here's info on how to increase the amount of breastmilk your baby gets:

If you're not breastfeeding at all, here's info on how to start again:

still a lot of crying and not much sleep.
What is her sleeping environment like? My baby sleeps best next to me. At that age, she didn't sleep well alone. She also likes to nap as I carry her in a baby carrier. Do you have a good baby carrier? I like the moby wrap because I can nurse in it while running errands and stuff. There's info on various baby carriers here:

As for the gas, a lot of babies have trouble digesting formula, as well as rice cereal. She also might be allergic to something in the formula, like cow's milk protein, so switching formulas might help with that. But lactose intolerance, although common in adults, is phenomenally rare in babies. If your baby were truly lactose intolerant, you'd be seeing worse symptoms than this.

Good luck to you and your baby.

I am happy to hear that you are finally making some progress. Those first few months are very difficult, especially when your baby has lactose intollerance. My oldest had it as a baby and we tried many different things to help. I don't remember what the name of the formula that ended up working for him was called, but I'm sure that Nutramigen AA is going to be a good place to start. Good luck and it does get easier as they get older. 6 months is a very nice age, and you are very close to it.

My daughter sounds like your daughter. Terrible sleeper but due to digestion problems. I had to have her sleep sitting up to get her to go to sleep (car seat in her crib). I changed my diet while breast feeding curtailed my milk/cheese/yougurt diet and avoided gassy foods (broccoli). I put her on Simethecone too. After she 1 year put her on formula but I had to be sure it wasn't lactose based. Now, years later, I found out that she has a hiatal hernia (diaphram pushes her stomach up into her esophogus so all the stomach acid comes up into her mouth as there is no closure between her stomach and her esophogus) and she was born this way. Still major stomach issues and it is very difficult. Some day I know she'll need to have surgery.
