Is there anyone else out there not or have not had their infant immunized at the hospital for Hep B? We are expecting a baby boy any day and am reading so much on Autism from this immunization given at birth in infant boys that we are thinking of not immunizing until he is older.

You are not required to get the Hep B shot at the hospital. We signed a waiver before ds was born. Autism was not a factor in our decision not to vaccinate for Hep B. Your newborn is not at risk unless you or someone in your household actually has Hep B. Take your time, research your VPD's, and decide if and when to vaccinate based on your families situation. The hospital might pressure you, but politely repeat 'not at this time, thank you'. Also, do not let your lo leave the room if you are concerned that he might be vaccinated/circ'ed/formula fed etc. in the nursery (if these are things you are concerned with). Most hospitals are very compliant with rooming in, but you will have to check with yours to see how aggressive about it you will need to be. Just remember that you can always vaccinate or circ at a later date, but once it's done, it's done. Best of luck on your reading and congrats on your soon to be here little one!

I read that there are some bad side effects from Hep B and no one I know has it, so i opted out as well. Im not sure if all hospitals are required to ask permission, so maybe finding out ahead of time will put your mind at ease. You can always call the information line at the hospital and they will put you through to someone who can tell you.

Yes, lismom2 is right - there is no need to vaccinate against hep B at birth unless there is a risk of infection for the baby. My son was vaccinated against Hep B at the age of three month (the first shot) at our own request - I come from a high endemic area for hepitis B and we will be visiting my close ones and relatives frequently.
