Does anyone have any ideas how to break the news of being pregnant to your boss? This is the only person I am having a hard time getting the guts to tell them I am pregnant. I do not believe she will be very happy as I have only been in the position I am in for about 6 months (at the job for 5 years though), my position is not something you can just hire someone temporarily, but rather takes a while to understand everything involved.

I decided that, because my bosses would need time to organize things and find someone to replace me, I needed to tell them as soon as possible (around 7-8 weeks). I thought it would be a lot harder but it came up naturally when one of them emailed me the schedule for the next semester and asked me to confirm my own projects. I just answered that it was possible I wouldn't be available after a certain date because I'd recently found out I was pregnant, that I wanted them to know right away so they could plan and that I'd keep them posted on due date, complications, when I'd need to stop working, etc. I was scared but they took it very well, were happy for me and started looking for a sub. Of course, this meant other people had to find out out my pregnancy before I was quite ready (I'd wanted to wait until the end of the first trimester because I'd mc'd before) but it all worked out for the best. I'd say don't wait too long. People are usually so excited for you that they forget to be mad at you for being pregnant, even if it's a big inconvenience for them.

You can wait until the 12 week mark and they would still have approxiamately 28 weeks to prepare for your departure. She can be mad on a personal level but on a professional level she should be happy for you and help you to prepare for your leave. While it may be hard to replace you temporarily, I am sure it can be done. If you are afraid of her reaction, then maybe have HR sit in on the meeting? Just remember that no matter how long you have been in the position, you cannot be fired and they have to hold your job for you (for a certain amount of time). Good luck when you do tell her and congratulations on your pregnancy.

I work in a corporate office and I just found out this past weekend that i'm prego. I plan on waiting to tell anyone at work for as long as possible. I want to make sure that my hubby and i have a plan for the baby aftermath (if one of us decides to leave our job to raise our baby). I want to make sure we have a plan before anyone at work assumes or makes plans for me, since i can definately see that happening. trying to sneak some decaf into the afternoon coffee break is my big challenge right now! good luck with whatever you decide!

When ever you tell you boss and how ever you do it doesn't matter that much. Just be sure to tell you boss personally before it hits the office rumour mill. There's nothing like having you boss approach you with "You'll never guess what I heard at the coffee pot today." So make sure your boss is one of the first work people you tell.
