Trying to get son to wear undies!!!

Hey there :)......my son will be 3 in December and has been showing signs that he is ready to start potty training....i have been trying to work with pull-ups, but he does not care if he goes potty in them, so I wanted to put him in underwear so he could feel when he goes and be bothered and tell me! I am facing a problem though. He either pitches a fit when I try to put the undies or boxer briefs on him or takes the brief and runs away! I dont know whether to just stop trying with the undies and just continue hoping that the pull-up situation gets better and taking him to the potty every 20 min or if I should just force him to wear the undies...I just dont want to make the potty experience horrible and unfun, but I am confused! Any advice would be great!! Thanks!

Not sure if this will help because my son is a little younger but and i can still dress in front of him as well as his father. I got him to wear underwear by letting him pick some out then i would make a big deal about myself putting on my own underwear so that he can see that they are a part of everyday wear. pretty soon he started wanting to wear them instead of diapers. He still wont go in the potty but he now can hold it for a couple hours or more before needing to go.
