My son has always pinched while nursing and I thought he would eventually grow out of it but now that he has great pinching control to eat the pinching has gotten worse. He usually pinches while nursing but often starts when upset or tired. I know he is doing this to sooth himself but my skin can only handle so much. If I stop him, say ouch, remove his hands or cover my skin, he cries or stops nursing. Can anyone offer practical advice or tell me how long this will continue... I need hope, it really, really hurts.

My son use to bite and pinch both. I woudl say ouch or pull him off. He would also cry, but I don't really see anything wrong with that. I would put him down out of my lap and tell him "no pinching" or "no biting." He eventually quit, but I had to sit him in the floor and show him that as long as he does that, no milk! I woudl make him stay down for a minute and then continue. Be consistent. They actually are fast learners.

My 15 month-old still occasionally bites, and laughs afterwards! (Not so funny for me.) I just take her off and stop completely. I have also found that taking her into a dark room with no distractions helps a lot.
